What, me worry?
Howdy everyone!

I've got a coworker asking me to find a stereo in the $400-500 price range, I told him DON'T BUY BOSE (can you, that cheaply :D ?), and don't go to Best Buy, that I'd get him a kick a$$ system he wouldn't believe for that money.

Receiver or pre and amp only, no sources or speakers. Remote preferred but not nec.

The scenario:

4 guys, early 20s', renting a house in a known party area.

Speakers: Boston Acoustics A-100s, bought because when they were auditioned the cops came. I warned him that the system will likely be able to blow them.

He said too bad the systems' not female.

Mostly CDs'. Needs to look at least decent.

Jeez except for the looks and CD part it all sounds familiar. :D They'll prolly need a tap too lol.

That's it! Any suggestions?

Pete

Edit: If anyones' got anything that might fit the bill just PM me. Thanks!

that's just what was listed lately, most of it on the old server. I see a couple I would buy for that job, fer sure!

:worried: BTW, that was a down-and-dirty check of the classifieds on both the new and old servers. I hope I didn't miss any, if so, it was unintentional.

How about a 9090db, fresh from Echo Wars? Power a-plenty, that's for sure. Spec'd out at a hair over 160 watts per channel before clipping. pm me if ya wanna talk.

Hey thanks everyone!

I was planning on checking the ads, just gathering info in anticipation.

Talked to him again yesterday evening and they've decided that they NEED a remote.

I know, i know, I tried to talk them out of it but what can you do :dunno: ?

So I'm thinking either a pre with remote (but have VERY little nollig of that stuff) and then one of the great amps kicking around here, or perhaps a HT rec'r  - I'm really out of my element here.

I should mention it can't have any "issues".

Pete

If they are playing ceedees, or perhaps have the cable box running through it, you've got close to total remote control right there, don't you?

DSK,

It's the volume/mute control they want most of all. Dang lazy kids!

Back in the day, we had to actually get up and walk 5 miles uphill through snowdrifts all year long to CHANGE THE TV CHANNEL lol.

Pete

BTW, you look different, somehow. :D

I've seem cd players with volume control. Think there's one for sale somewhere on audiogon now. Lousy kids! (picture grandpa Simpson)

Even the sony 5-CD changer has a remote with a volume control!

There are a lot of amps with remotes. I have a Cambridge Audio A-500 65-wpc integrated that has a lot of headroom, and will drive difficult loads, even 2 ohm, with a remote that also controls tuner and CDP. It wasn't $500 Canadian, purchased new! They make separates C500 pre and P500 power, that come up on the bay, among other places. I like it, but it is a little laid back for some tastes. JMHO

Hey if you can own a pair of 201 Direct Reflecting speakers for $19.95 just 5 blocks away, and there's a big wooden box labeled "dbx" that looks like a sub or what too, there's  HOPE :boink: for YOU.
(I'm just remembering my HS cheer squad; not overly addicted to bananas and the doctor says don't eat them often)
