Please recommend my first MC cart.

hugz---"The Audio Technica "AT30GTR" is available for EUR195 on ebay (brand new in box). It's a package deal including the AT30E MC cartridge, the AT630 Step up transformer and LS-12 headshell. It's from europe, so no customs charges.."

in rereading the first post from Luis, i see that you don't need a SUT so the AT30 would be even a better low cost MC starter if there is a source for one. LPGear has this AT F2 at for just under $200: https://www.lpgear.com/product/ATF2.html that seems to me to be very enticing.

Luis-i would hesitate at getting a denon 103 as the stylus is conical and can't trace the high frequencies as accurately as an elliptical. it is a physical limitation. the 103s used to be available with elliptical and shibata shaped styli but not these days. note that this is my personal preference on an intellectual (supposed on my part) level.

if you go MC, you would have to have the cartridge re-tipped from someone like Soundsmith and would be without a cartridge while it was gone, that is if you had worn out the stylus or had broken the cantilever.

for that reason alone, i have multiple cartridges acquired over the years. the cheapest grado is good to have on hand for the event of cartridge/stylus disaster. OR, the audiotechnica AT95e available from Amazon for less than $50 delivered. the at95e sounds way better than it should for the money.

i hate to say it but the 2Mred leaves me cold. i kind of put it in the same boat as the sumiko oyster cart which imparts the same feeling on me and my friends.

i will repeat my recommendation for the ATF2MC at $200 as being just what you may be looking for in your quest for a first MC.

needlestein,,,,the 2002e is one of my favorite carts, i may have to spring for the $300. my very fave was the original ADC XLM. my friend went on to love the sonuses but then peter pritchard was forced to stop as it was basically the same design as the XLM but with his agreement with BSR, he was done.

my new direction has given me a love of ortofon MCs and the Kb in particular but could bed forced to use a cadenza black.

Well.....no he did not. I am told it was damaged when he moved into a new house. He will not be allowed to borrow anything else, that is for sure......
I'm betting the owner will never get the straight skinny on that question. My guess would be tequila and cocaine were involved.

Huh. I suspect this involved chickens. Now of course tequila, cocaine, and poker night with chickens is an entirely believable scenario. You got a bunch of chickens slamming shots and doing lines, well then they start to do the funky chicken. More than one piece of audio gear has been damaged in these kind of fowl attended binges.

My sincere condolences for the damage to your turntable.

Damn chickens, I suspected as much, but couldn't prove it.....

I won a used MA 2002e in original packaging on eBay tonight. Hopefully it will be in decent shape. My 1st used cartridge purchase.

That was one of my all time favorite cartridges! VERY linear, superior imaging. I had eveything just perfect with my system, 2002e mounted on a grace 707 tonearm on a technics SL120 (armless 1200).
Playing Paul Horn-Inside The Great Pyramid and i could sense all SIX surfaces of the King's Chamber. I wish you could still buy them new. Its Andante stylus was said to be the exact analog og the cutting stylus.
ENJOY.

Recently I’ve had an infatuation with this song

I guess even if it’s only chickens, said farmer might be just in his storming in armed and ready for an altercation.

Louis Jordan is pretty awesome.

Used MC cart’s for 50% or less than retail are even more awesome. Check Barter Town, check other sources, even might get lucky and find one on a used tbl for 10% of original cost. Personally, my first MC Experience was a DL-103 thru an AU-320 into a Denon DP-1700 TT. I got the whole All-Denon rig for $350 at an estate sale.... the 103 is supposedly A PERFECT match w/ the Grace 840F tonearm. And I was unimpressed. My Shure V-15 HR-P beat it in just about every area. A/B’d the daylight out of it. Only one song on one record sounded better on the Denon.

I almost sold the Au-320 SUT to fund a HOMC then I bartered w someone in BT and got an Ortofon Quintet Blue For a very good price ($250) and it mates, to my ears, so well with the Denon Rig that I almost forgot I broke the MR Stylus on my Shure. (I did- it’s sad)

$250 is Slightly over your budget. Just a touch. But What I learned is that I like Ellipticals, I like detail, I like accuracy, and fast response. But I also enjoy the excellent separation on my Sumiko Pearl (B cart for Denon), the delicacy of detail with the XLM II improved (on the RIGHT arm -lowww mass- makes a difference) and by far I have enjoyed the 2m Red the most on my SL-D2. It matches the VTA/Arm very well.

Let my experience be a lesson. Experiment. Get two cheap MM carts (my 2m Red was $50 demo) one conical, one Elliptical, w similar specs. See which makes your records sound better. Then look for a similar “feel” in your MC. I wasn’t even THINKING Ortofon for my first MC (was considering 302ii or used AT MC) but once I heard 2M Red properly loaded in my SL-D2 I opened my mind to them. I’m sure glad I did. Anyways- too long already. Hope this helps a little. Have fun, switch it up, play Louis Jordan (love “Beans And Cornbread”) and have fun w it!!
