Running hot and cold

I was just wondering if other people are like me. I seem to get intensely interested and excited about stereo and music for a while and then I have relatively no interest at all. And then I do and then I don't. Are other people like that?

A system or component change may work?

I was that way for a long while, and then got a free Sansui 1000A receiver and got it working, I also changed my speakers from a pair of "worked over" Infinity’s (only the midrange was stock, the two woofers and the tweeter are not stock units)

Now I run a pair of Tempest Lab 3E Series with “Hiel Air Motion Transformer” tweeters. :thmbsp:

Now when I have time to be in the living room, I use that system and even if I don't put on a recording, I may just listen to FM (104.3 WAXQ NY)

The point I am trying to make is that something about the system you are using may be causing an unconscious "listener fatigue" (the feeling of "something-just-not right-but-you-can't-put-your-finger-on-it-feeling"). :scratch2:

BTW, the Sansui replaced an Onkyo TS-SV454 5.1 receiver, not really BPC, the front panel is metal.

Not being into movies too much, the loss of the 5.1 decoding is not a real problem (I hooked a vintage Dynaco Quadadaptor to the existing rear speakers and the Sansui). The sub is now hooked into the "mono sum" RCA output of the Sansui.

Unless other things take priority, I find myself listening more now than ever!

It took a long time, but things just fell into place “sonically” of late.

Indeed, I have two main hobbies: audio and collecting video games. When I run hot with one, I run cold with the other, and vice versa. That doesn't mean I'll stop doing one completely, it's just that I'm not that interested in one at the time.

I love music any type of music except "country" ok maybe a few of the country ladies. As to your thread, I am like that also which is why I have four primary systems for variety with 4 A/B speakers systems or 8 individual speaker system. Variety is the spice of life but for those days I am in a funk all it take is the silky smooth dynaco A-50 to restore my love of music.

I think everyone is like that, at least to some extent, just some people are more so than others. For survival reasons, we evolved to seek out newness and variety AND also stability and security, and we tend to go through swings as a result. Too much of something and you get tired of it for a while. Stay away from it for a while and it becomes "new" again and you get re-interested. It's normal, unless you are too extreme about it, swinging from total obsession to total neglect.

hye gapporin i also have the same hobby audio which is new and video games since i can rember. have almodt every system complete from the time of NEs to n64.all the segas and what not.

i own over 25 nes systems as of today and 13 snes have over 650 nes games all different and actually about 900 total. 150 different snes games got all the rpgs exetp 2 most complete and mint. the whole nine

I rotate several hobbies.

Audio
old telephones
cars
gokarts
piano
custom newer computers
vintage computers

I rotate them all throughout the year, audio usually gets march-august, but I still like all of it year around, but I always have a primary hobby.
Although, I always listen to music on my main system whenever I want to listen to music.

Hot and Cold on audio?
No, way!
Just fluctuations in play money and WAF. :bash:

Err...but then there's that addiction aspect too.
A short lived high that comes with a new acquisition and the looonnnng down-time between scores.

but I just don't know how to go about getting it."

I never run cold,I am always on the hunt for new music.I spend my lunch hour surfing AK and Mymusic and amazon

Stereo's been a hobby for me since 1973. My interest in it has gone from lukewarm to hot to lukewarm over the years, but never "cold". Computers have been a hobby for me since 2001, and has stayed smoking hot ever since. Shortwave and scanner listening, those go hot to icy freezing cold like a roller coaster; the shortwave's in the basement, and the scanner on the desk hasn't been turned on in months; I've been thinking of digging up the shortwave before it gets too cold out to put up an outdoor longwire.

70s vintage Marantz [and others] and guns [model 12 winchesters & S&W revolvers] are my main hobbies and I tend to put one ahead of the other in cycles usualy brought about by a hot find to get me rolling in that direction....

Wow, that's pretty neat. I could go on about what I have and enjoy, but I don't think that this is the time or place. :P

I know exactly what you mean, am subject to it, and by the looks of it so are lots of other AKers!

Good point , I was listened to music for many years without worrying much about the equipment. Then one day I decided to purchase a new 5.1 reciever with Dolby surround and DTS and other great things plus it did stereo so I could get rid of my old Reciever as well.
At the time I thought it did not sound as good on music but because the new surround toy was fun I thought little of it and really stopped listening to music. It was not until I purchased a cheap used Technics integrated amp that I realised what the problem was, all of a sudden the music came back and with it my interest and a serious bout of upgrading.
For a while the equipment hunt took the top priority , now that I am happy with my system I have been buying LP's , CD's , DVDA's SACD's and even a couple of Cassettes and its great .

i run cold during the week and hot on the weekends regarding audio.... too much going on during the week to enjoy anything. mostly talk radio during the week...

I have been running hot since I retired from the golf industry last Feb. but I am getting a little bored , so I may have to find a job, which will probably cool me off a little.

Gosh talk about the perfect timing on a post!

Everything was great. Due to AK generousity time and equipment wise I FINALLY had a system that ROCKED.

Then, after enjoying it for maybe 1 month or less, the whole thing went south. Amp blew, woofer blew, preamp bit the dust, second amp blew. In very short order.

It still disgusts me thinking about it.

Then to boot, I've moved and no longer do I have 4 stores to indulge my lp fix 10 minutes away.

So I more or less walked away for a coupla months. My precious lps  .

Now I'm jones'n for some tunes!
