Hello,
I have a Sony TC-250 RXR which had a bad left channel,I recapped it and problem solved.Has very good playback but when I try to record the audio playback is very low,I have the VU meters at full scale and still very weak PB I cleaned the heads also.. I was wondering if it might be the head?? It has A black erase head with 3 wires and a chrome plated head with also just 3 wires going to it.I'm confused anyone have any ideas??

Is your pressure pad there and in good condition? Also, are your heads clean and in good condition? Also, if recording, please avoid back coated tape or tape with very high bias needs. Something like 3M Scotch Dynarange or Maxell UD will do well on this Sony. Also, if you've not been welcomed to AK, please let me welcome you to the forums. Post well, wisely, and often. I'm glad you're here.

Thank you, and I like this forum allot it comes up often when I google.
Yes. it was missing the pad,I picked up 7 realistic concerto 1800ft tapes 2 new and 5 used and it appears to be a very dirty tape, after I clean the heads they get dirty right away.

Thanks! That's it! I noticed the screeching sound as the tape went by the head,I've never heard of that term before. That wiki link mentions baking at 130-140F to dry them out,I'll give that a try.I have nothing to loose.I picked up 7 tapes 2 sealed and 5 used for only $16 on ebay.

That works,I baked them at 150F. for 2 hours but the squeal across the head returns. Are there any available newly mfg. tapes out there one can buy?
