First I get this response:

"Hey,Justin asked me to message you about the craigslist post you have for sale. , he Just moved in two days ago to his new apartment so he doesnt know much about this area. If your still have it feel free to reach him at longhmk@ gmail. com or call 4026618 for faster communication.
Thanks
Kaelon."

I respond cautiously, using the email i use for junk mail; then i get this:

"Thanks for getting back to me,the conditions are greatly acceptable.I am ready to make the purchase and my mode of payment would be in check,i will make arrangement for a local pick up as soon as you receive the check and it cleared to your account.I really wish to be at your location for viewing but it is not necessary since i will not be chanced due to the nature of my job.concerning the pick up,my carrier will come to your location for the pick up immediately the check clears your account. Please kindly get back to me with your full name, address to send payment, cell phone number and your bottom dollar so i can proceed with mailing of the payment immediately.
Note that payment will be sent to your address via FED-EX/UPS within 72hours and I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for the delivery i will have my carrier come over as soon as you have cashed the check..Thanks"

The sendor identifies himself as "Justin Stuart" but the email is "jacquelinefrank65@gmail.com"

Not asking for my bank account number, not asking for some fee from me. Seems too elaborate to just trying to harvest my email. English is not the first language here... Still smells terrible.

I got the exact same text from a guy about a turntable I have on Craigslist. Definitely a scam.

Did you really need to ask?
I'm 6 states away from you and can smell that BS from here.

i guess now i'm trying to figure out what the angle is. do they just want my email address? IP address? some scam with the check?

check and it cleared to your account.
I know your bank, maybe your main branch with the cleared check...

Please kindly get back to me with your full name, address to send payment, cell phone number
I know the mailing address for your bank statement, the full name on the account and a phone number that might be connected to the account. I even know resent activity in the account, a check # number I just deposited, on this date, from da da da.

Generic and nonspecific content in the message is a giveaway. No mention of the actual item he/Justin allegedly want to purchase or where either are located. A phish worded like this could go to thousands of sellers.

When you compare it to a normal Craigslist transaction...

"I'd like to buy the item."

"Sure, let's meet at this time and place."

"Here's the money for the item."

"Thank you. Enjoy the item."

...the fact that something ain't right becomes clearer. It's one of those check appears to clear, money appears in your account, item gets picked up, check bounces later on and you're on the hook.

The scam is this: The check is fake. At a bare minimum, the scammer will have your item and you will have nothing. Most versions of this scam however include a variant where the "buyer" says he is making the check for more than the amount of the purchase and asks that you use part of that extra amount to pay the carrier he sends to pickup the merchandise and for your trouble you can keep the rest. However, when its all said and done, you have a fake check and are out both the item as well as the cash you gave the "carrier" who is also the scammer.

Scam, the check comes, it's for a grand or two, they ask you to cash it and wire them the difference. I got that exact same message the other day and already have a fake check coming. I've been getting a couple a week now. Love it.
