SpeakerLab 7WA Crossover

I'll bet I'll be close to $100 in parts in these crossovers when done. It better sound like new speakers, then they will need re-veneered. Good thing I only paid $50 for them.

:lurk:

Don't worry, I paid $100 for my SL7s and will only have a little over $1000 invested when all is said and done, I think you are going to be live as far as price goes. However, I went overboard. I think you will enjoy them for sure.

By the way, feeling up thru the cabinet I would say I have the Atlas driver, as to which on I'm not sure. I think only one Atlas was used as a mid, is this right?

Please forgive me for being dense, but are you saying that iron cores are preferable for low frequency drivers, or are air cores the better choice?

Thanks

Typically speaking the iron core will have lower insertion loss- but lower saturation point. How ever the 600 watt premium iron core inductors from Erse are really nice- kinda best of both worlds with very low insertion loss and high saturation point. Cost is another thing too....

I would prefere an iron core, under most circumstances, if they have a high saturation point.

Compare the spec "dcr" of each type and you will understand, also compare the gauge types as well. I wished they would print the saturation aspects of each but I seldom ever see that.

You big pro audio networks prefere active xovers to eliminate all the losses and booboo's associated with passive networks...for a reason. You throw a few thousand watts into an 18" pro stack there are not any passive applied inductors can take that kind of power I can think of!!

Well I open up the other cabinet and it looks like the diodes have been replaced. But by the schematic they have the cathodes tied together but in mine one cathode is tied to the anode of the other. It does make a difference in this application right? I have new ones on the way and I want to get it right the first time. The other cabinet had the cathodes tied like the schematic, although I believe they were not functioning(broken). Both tweeters seemed to have the same low output, could this be the reason why they both performed as they did or more like non-performed?

I have recently rebuilt the 7WA crossover utilizing the original coils, but all else is new. New, solid copper binding posts, high quality film caps and gold plated solder tabs. Silver solder was used throughout.
I have a picture but can't seem to upload it. A window keeps popping up telling me there was a problem with the upload but provides no details of what the problem is.
PM me if you want to see how I laid out the XO and I'll send the pic privately to you.

One way to deal with upload issues with a file type that AK doesn't like or support is to simply zip it and post it that way. I had to do this with openoffice file types that I wanted to post as the "ods" file type isn't supported here. Also, make sure that the the file type extension (such as .jpg) is written in lower case. The forum doesn't seem to like them when written in upper case.

Cheers,
James

edit: btw, DaWoofer hasn't posted since 2014. Sad, I enjoyed conversing with him.
