Storing Cornwalls

I need to store my Cornwalls while I complete a major renovation. Had my daughter move in with grand daughter. She's taking the lower level of my raised ranch for an apartment so I lose my rec room. Going to go all out and convert my un used attached garage in to a killer family room.
But while the reno is being done I need to store my Cornwalls. Will be storing them at a nearby facility. Hopefully the reno will be completed by end of February. I'm in Canada where the winters are cold. Any tips on proper storage? Don't want any damage to the finish, etc.

Wrap up the speakers in moving quilts.....
I don't know what those cold temps will do to the speakers.....others will chime in...

I think Squirrel nailed it....except for, protecting them from squirrels...:scratch2:

They should have K33's in them which have cloth surrounds. Nothing should freeze/break (like a water pipe unless you have them water cooled?)

Just box em up, store them and enjoy them when you retrieve them.

Side note... (if it were me)...

Will they fit in say, the bedroom or spare or someplace else where you can enjoy them while the work is going on? (apart from a squirrel's den of course)

Ok, pardon all the squirrel comments....sometimes I just can't help myself.

:D

I wish. They were perfect size in my rec room but that options out for 3 or 4 years. They just aren't going to fit anywhere else. As soon as my garage reno is complete they'll be back in action. If I could possibly use them anywhere now, I would.

I would consider wrapping them in plastic bags or something moisture proof, then in the moving quilts. This will insure no moisture gets soaked into the wood that might cause problems in the cold. Also have them upside down to let gravity help the woofers from sagging. They have spent their life right side up, so it just might allow the voice coils to stay centered durring all the temp shifts.

If the storage floor is concrete then lift them off the floor so that moisture doesn't transfer to the bottoms.

If you want to be extra safe - here is what I did when I moved my Cornwalls:

Wrapped each in a blanket - went to Home Depot and picked up a couple sheets of the 2 inch or so Styrofoam insulation - and cut to fit bottom and each side and top - then wrapped in moving cellophane wrap - which secured everything nicely - you could probably skip the insulation - and just use blankets and the plastic wrap.

I had my Electrovoice Interface D's in garage storage for a long time (probably 10 years)

I simply placed a 2x4 on the floor to stand them on (turned out to be brilliant as a rain storm once pushed a bunch of water into the garage). I faced them towards each other and tossed an old towel over them as a dust cover.

Just last winter, pulled them out & gave them to the nephew for him to enjoy. (along with a Yamaha CR-2040, 3bx, dbx sub harmonic synth and Audio Control C-101? I forget the number)

Speakers were fine. They went into storage with rotted foam on the woofers (it rots out after about 10 years) and interestingly, the woofer foam stayed rotted during storage. It didn't get any better.

If near Toronto, I can offer basement space as I have freed up some room. No charge.

Right now I've got a plastic sheet under them in my garage but because its my garage I'm renovating they'll be going out to a storage facility this weekend where I'll probably put wood under them as well.

Thank you for the offer but I'm going to have to rent a storage space anyway as I have other items I'll need to store until my renovation is done.

I'd go along these lines, unless you think the roof leaks then I'd put plastic over them too. But, I think they're better off breathing than trying to seal them up tight. And, yes, ABSOLUTELY be sure they're raised off the floor

If they have ports I'd think about stuffing them with something to keep out any critters. I use those fabric softener sheets when I store my boat and car for winter. Someone once told me that mice don't like the smell. Never had any mouse problems so either it works, or there weren't any mice in the first place. Presumably the former since it was the storage owner that suggested I do it.

I kept some Heresy's above my garage for about 4 years covered in trash bags with no problem. I had to do something to keep out all the dust and dirt that would accumulate. I don't think sealing them in plastic is a good idea... I left mine open at the bottom and raised them up off the floor. I think you got some good advice here!

I would try to keep the temp above 50 degrees and the humidity constant to its current location. Keep them off the ground, wrap them but in something that will breathe a bit and don't let the plastic touch the finish if you choose to go that route.

I think speakers are better if they get some routine play, the offer of the basement may lead to good karma.Human contact is after all therapeutic!

Finally completed my Garage to family room renovation that I started in November. Going to get my Cornwalls out of storage tomorrow.

You don't mess around, very nice!!!

We will of course, be waiting for the pictures.

Got my cornwalls back home and warmed up nicely. Haven't got my sound system hooked up yet. Friday new furniture gets delivered then I'll take some pics.
