Just picked one up today (first gen.) for 50 bucks...I think it was a good deal. I took it to a guy who services my equipment for free so I don't have it at the moment, but it had an Empire cartridge that was gold w/ a clear stylus piece. I'll get the numbers as soon as I get the table back, but:

a) was this a good deal on my end (the table is in excellent condition, very clean, barely used)

b) does anyone have any insight into the cartridge and stylus

c) on my current table I have a Shure m97xe, stick with it or upgrade?...(I may have to upgrade because somehow the 2 pieces seperated and I had to epoxy them back together..opinions on this would be appreciated as well)

d) the table is missing the counter weight lock, is this an easy part to find?

Sounds like the cartridge is an Empire 2000III good cartridge It's a keeper.........

yes you got a good deal. I'd dump the M97XE if the cartridge is an Empire 2000III unless you want to try the jico SAS stylus in the XE body...

d) the table is missing the counter weight lock, is this an easy part to find?

If your asking about the counter weight yes the one from the 1200 MK series will work or you could do an ebay search under turntable parts.

Thanks so much for the quick feedback. And it DOES have the counterweight, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to keep it from moving (its not on a grooved slider). I know that on the underside of the arm there should be some type of mechanical mechanism to lock the counterweight in place, but unfortunately I'll have to wait to check that out when it comes back from the shop. Hopefully my repair-man will figure that one out.

Polk Audio RTi A3 Bookshelf Speakers

Other than this new table (replacing an SL-1900), what are some solid improvements I could make to my system. I'm only 19 and this is a bedroom system (though I am proud to say that I think it sounds better than my fathers). I definitely would like to look into a better Cassette Player, one deck, 3-head, Pioneer preferred to match the amp, also preferably of the same age. I would also like to look into a tuner.

I looked up the manual for the SL-1300, and just like the SL-1200, the counter weight should twist on and not move, unless you move it. If it slides back and forth without twisting it, then the thread is probably stripped. There is an additional counter weight for a heavier cartridge that screws into the back of the tonearm,(For Cartridges 8.5~13g).

G'day all. gdrum4719, just on the 'separated' M97xE, yes this happened to one of mine as well. In all honesty the glue they used could be better but perhaps Shure had no other choice!

Yes you can glue the two parts back together with care, but ensure that the two parts are positioned correctly as before, and the existing glue marks will make this easy to do.

I'd use 'superglue' type of adhesive as I did on mine, but it might be better to use the one that takes 30 seconds or so before it completely hardens so that you're sure everything is properly positioned. Don't use too much! A little goes a long way!

Keep the Shure M97xE as it's good cartridge especially if the electrical loading is optimised. http://www.mds975.co.uk/Content/vinyl07.html Regards, Felix aka catman.
