These bad boys should be here at my place in less than 8 hours. I don't think I've been this excited in a long time! Here's gonzothegreat's linky, clicky.

I hope I'll love them...

T-5.5hrs, and counting. Odd not having the "triple stack" set-up. Not a single driver in the living room, all speakers tore down and stored in the spare room as of last night. Our living room looks terribly empty now, but not for long!

I hope those were the speaks in your avatar, bcuz they aren't anywhere in the eBAy auction link?

asm, Those just happen to be the best pic I have of the AR9 speaker. They're not mine in my avatar, mine will be here/there in about T-3 hours 40 minutes.

Just before lunchtime...

Will you even manage to get the steak, champagne in before the rest of the world sends telegrams? :lmao:

Well, chew 30 times before you swallow so's you don't expire before you get 'em running! And don't authorize your self-portrait on cardboard labeled 2% :D We demand the TRUTH about the things :guitar:  :yippy: :blah: :blah: :jawdrop:

In his ad he said they still sound like new... That's to be determined. Man I hope they're in "playable" condition!

Hey Greg,
If they're cold when they arrive, make sure you let them warm up a bit. Mine were in a storage locker and it dropped down into the teens the day I picked them up, so I let them sit over-night before firing them up. Hopefully, yours are nice and warm already when you get them! :thmbsp:

They're Here...Can't login at home though, my ISP is on the fritz!

Thanks for the tip Retro! Already done though. The left speaker that had the dented in dustcap is repaired. But the right one, now that's another story. The surrounds are starting to go on both 12's or 11's and the single, I think 8. It seems the tweeter isn't functioning either, hopefully she's just cold. At low listening levels though, so far so good.

Retro et all....
i am new to this forum but have been on the Sansui forum before. i own a POWERFUL amp and would appreciate suggestions for some speakers able to handle it... presently i own a pair of JBL 120's which are great until i've dipped into the vino for a while and decide to stretch her legs out... i have blown the fuses in the speakers a few times, i've seen some big assed Infinitys on the bay sometimes but know very little about them, any input would be helpful!!!

Hey Shelby,
First off, welcome to Audio Karma aka AK!

Secondly, well, you just saw how much Bolly paid for these Teledyne Acoustic Research AR-9s and they are rated at 170 watts continuous and something like 370 watts peaks, but you have to remember, they are 4 ohm speakers. When I first got my pair home, I hooked them up to a Pioneer SX-1980 Receiver which kicks out 270 watts per channel continuous. These AR-9's strained the juice right out of that 1980 and that's when I decided I better bi-amp these speakers. These speakers will handle your amp, guaranteed. My pair, I paid $550 for and they were a local pick up, but, like Bolly's, they needed the woofers and large mids re-foamed right away. I've seen these speakers sell as high as $1500 plus shipping on eBay! :yikes: So really, Bolly and I got awesome deals on ours. There are plenty of speakers out there that will handle a large amp, some of the large JBL's will handle anything you can throw at them as well. Once you've got 100 watts continuous pumping into a decent pair of efficient speakers, your ears won't be able to handle it anyways. My main amps are rated at 250 watts and 150 watts and both of those work well with the speakers I have. I have a few pairs of Pioneer HPM 100's, Polk Monitor 7's, EPI TE 120's, Large Advents, to name a few and all of them sound very nice at low or high volumes, but I normally don't blast them too bad, unless of course someone asks me how loud will they go... :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

Thanks for the warm welcome!!! What exactly is biamping? i own a BA5000 ( 300 watts rms) and a tube hybrid pre, like to crank it sometimes, the speakers are rated at 250, perhaps this bi amping could help??

Actually, with that amp, you probably won't need to bi-amp anything. Bi-amping is actually running 2 amps into the same one pair of speakers. Usually one amp is driving the upper drivers (mids and tweets) and the other amp is driving the bass drivers.

ok, thats what i thought it meant. the jbl's i have are cf 120's ( 250 watts) I would like something with some more clarity and something that can handle more power, thinking in the future to pick up another BA5000 and run them mono.... I have recently seen a pair of infinity speakers( mamoth looking things) but remember the description stating they could handle a wack of power, but honestly i do not know much about them, any thoughts?

Glad to see you're as pumped about getting these monsters as I would have been. I've read previous posts about AR-9s and it doesn't surprise me that the seller missed the decaying foam. I specifically asked about it before I backed out and he didn't really answer the question. Even after that I seriously considered punching the "Buy-it-now" button. If I ever decided to downsize, I'd be able to make back my initial investment easily.

What really got me interested in the AR-9 is the "acoustic blanket" around the mids/tweets. I have a cheap pair of Jamo speaks that have an anti-diffraction front baffle and the imaging is sometimes amazing considering they were a budget speaker (90's vintage). The bass is a little lacking for my ears. 10" & ported - the bass isn't bad. Heck the bass sounds better in my room than a bunch of other speakers I tried (JBL L80t, cheap Infinity RSxxxx 2 ways and my Ditton 33s). I just wanted something with killer bass and "close-your-eyes-you-are-there" imaging. I've never heard a pair of AR-9s but from the assorted posts, it sure sounded like a good candidate.

I have a pair of big ARs I got from Auditech a while back (AR18 iirc) and they don't have the bottom end I was looking for. The dual 8" woofers are OK but they don't bring me to my happy place. That and they'll suck most amps bone dry. I tried them with a ballsy AV receiver and one word came to mind - muddy. Really muddy. Like the tweeters had died. With my Kenny 700m, they came alive.

Get yourself a pair of Carver Amazing Platinums. Talk to Toasted Almond on this board, he'll give you an ear-full about them. Like I said, these very AR-9's would be another good speaker. And the big JBL's I'm referring to, always use four numeric digits to describe them, not two or three.
