University T-50 driver or Altec 808-8A on 511Bs...

Me likes the eargasm retroplasm...
I just picked up 4 more 511Bs.... I now have 12 of these and I don't understand why they are so prevalent in my neck of the woods...
anyhow-

2 of the four have university t-50 driver in them and the other 2 have 808-8A drivers on them...

I think I like the University better than the Altecs... Anyone else ever compared the two?

Hey I can dispose of those junky 808a's for you. Just mail them over to my house

I have not had first hand experience with the T-50 drivers but I know University did make some good stuff.

One of the biggest things that makes an Altec driver sound bad is a cheap diaphragm. Also the symbiotik phragms do not sound very good unless you run a super tweeter. Original aluminum phragms, new GPA phragms, or Radian (havent heard them but I hear they sound great) are the way to go

I used to have a 511 problem also. They just kept showing up. Finally I started selling them. Now I am down to just 2 pairs.:thumbsup:

I have a pair with 808 and OEM diaphragms
and a pair with 808 and great plains diaphragms from about '05
and a pair with the T-50s
and a pair with Selenium D220Ti ... These I use a little rubber tape on the inside to silence the ringyness...
and 2 pair with Selenium D 250-X ... Of course these are for three ways and need a tweet also...

The T-50s seem to sound fuller, more lively, and like the xylophone and saxes better.... maybe it is just my space...
 
Very interesting biscuithead. If I ever come across a pair of T-50, I'll have to pick them up for testing:thumbsup:
