W60E Owners - Crossover Question

Gang-Twanger

Hey there,

I was wondering whether the crossover on the W60E is accessible from the back of the speaker cabinet. I realize that the W60E's drivers are front-loaded (as opposed to rear-loaded like on the W60D, which has the removable back-panel), but it just occurred to me that there are four wood screws surrounding the crossover and the mid/tweeter pots, and I started wondering if the crossover could be accessed by removing the 4 screws and fishing out the crossover through that square hole. Is that possible, or am I stuck with removing the woofer, removing the rockwool stuff, and going in through the front? I just want to get an idea of what I'm looking at before I get into this. I need to see what caps are in these and then get the equivalent replacements shipped before I get started with the solderin' and all that (Based on what I've been reading, oil caps are the way to go on these speakers... at least on the mids and tweeters, so I'll try and use oil ones all around... I'm looking to keep the warmth).

Anyway, my question is, can I access it through the square hole on the back panel, or am I stuck with going through the front? Thanks in advance...

Pop the woofer out and access them there.

Bummer. Alright, that's what I figured (I removed the woofers and mid-woofers once before when I rotated them 180 degrees, but that's it... I didn't pull out the rockwool or anything). Oh well. I was just thinking I could remove the crossovers and take them with me when I go on vacation (to Maine) and take my time on the soldering. A project for me to do while I'm up there, you know? It's gonna' either be that or I'm gonna' build some room-treatment panels, but the caps are still on the immediate agenda because they're due for it. I'm having a hard time with the idea of taking them out of service for even a day or two, which is why it would be nice to get this done while I'm away and can't listen anyway... (They're working out great sitting on their sides by the way).

You mean like paper in oil caps? Like Russian PIOs? I did change two of of my caps in one of my W70Ds but I used those cheapo radio shack $1.29 caps...I figured it would have to be better than the 45 year old caps that were already in there.

paper in oil caps last nearly forever and are usually considered better than replacements especially the cheap RS stuff. Might want to put them back in. what did it do tot he sound? Better?

Well I cannot tell the difference really....I only did it to one cabinet...so the original caps are oil? I cannot say for sure about the sound since each cabinet has a different non-original tweet which will be remedied when my Phillips clear dome tweeters arrive...

If the originals are oil then no need to recap?

If you pull it out of the OX hole (very hard to impossible) or through the woofer hole (EZ) makes no difference, you will still need to disconnect it so pull the woofer, remove the OX and take them with you as you wanted to do.

I undid the 4 screws in the back and brought the X-O thru the woofer hole. IIRC, I left the wires connected...but that was 4 years ago :scratch2:

Also, IIRC, the screws have nuts at the circuit board. I replaced most of the old hardware as well.
