What does NOS stand for?

New Old Stock. Stuff that's never been used before but is old.

Doug

EDIT: Ha! All within two minutes! And one answer is even smart ass.

New Original Stock. In other words, a part built by the original manufacturer and never used. Example: A fender from a '67 Chevelle built by G.M. and still in the crate today. (OK, New Old Stock!!)

Or, it can go bad just sitting on the shelf. Like an old electrolytic or paper foil capacitor. Or a college degree.

in the Audio world, it can also mean Non-Over Sampling, typically applies to DACs

"New Old Stock" doesn't necessarily mean pristine. Something can be completely unused but in lousy shape if stored under bad conditions.

Indeed. There's currently a "perfect" NOS/NIB (New In Box) JBL driver on ebay. With a perfectly dry rotted surround.

i previously worked for a major telephone company and NOS there means Not Out of Service trouble. thus the mental block.

NOS: New Old Stock.

Things that were made a long time ago that are still brand new in the box or bag. BUT it has to be BRAND NEW! As in never used. If it's been used, even once, it's USED. It's not NOS

The good 'orgional' stuff! People will pay a high price for the orgional items and not OEM parts or parts just made to fit.

Example: you can get an OEM 1968 Camaro grill for $100 or so. Or if your 'lucky enough to find one', you can get the real origional grill for $350. Is it better??? That's not the point...it's the 'real' Chevie grill. Now for contests...that's very important to have the real part and not an aftermarket OEM part.

Many NOS parts and items are 'very rare' and 'very hard to impossible to find' so they command very high prices because they are the 'real thing'.
