yamaha cr-620 receiver display issue??

least likely to succeed
i bought a yamaha cr-620 today at a yard sale for $15, also got a pioneer tape deck ct-f550 with it for $5, receiver powers up and gets a strong signal, stronger am than fm even. the only thing is that the display doesn't light up, on the radio display and the signals. my question involves fixing this problem. are there bulbs i can get or are they specific to the unit? thanks in advance. also was this a good deal even with the missing lights?

Not a bad deal at all - Yamahas of that period tended to all be about the same (very good) quality, unlike other brands where the cheaper models were, well, cheaper. The CR-620 is about the middle model of that line and differs from those below and above it mostly in output power.

I'm not sure if the dial on the 620 is illuminated or not; on mine there's a light that moves along with the dial needle but no illumination of the scale. Could be designed that way, could be broke; it's been so long since I was inside it I just don't know. Your meters should be lit, though. AKer dgwojo is the guy to see for replacement bulbs.

Anyway, welcome to AK and you did good on the 620.

thanks alot for the info, i just sent him a message and found some other stuff as well in previous threads. this has quickely become a hobby for me so being new at it i tend to buy anything i can get my hands on if it's from the 60's or 70's, so it's good to know this is a solid receiver.

I'm not sure either...Give Merrylander a shout .He should know.

I just finished fixing up a CR-620 with much help from everyone here. There are four bulbs total, 12V @ 60mA, if I recall correctly (I purchased bulbs from Dave here at AK). There are three for the two tuning meters (one on each side, and one in the middle) and then one more in the dial pointer. All are the same. There are no dial lights. That was my biggest issue with this series of receivers - they're hard to see sometimes because they aren't lit up like some others from the same era (Marantz, etc.). They are definitely somewhat dim in comparison.

The CR-620 is a great receiver though. I bought a non-working 620 and a 420 at the same time, only intending to keep one. I loved them both and only sold the 620 because it was a few inches wider than the 420 and only slightly more powerful. The 420 is similar in size to the rest of my gear and fits in better - the 620 was big, so I can't imagine what a 2020 or even 3020 are like . . . .

The FM receivers in these are excellent. Nice find!

It seems to be a design flaw in the bulbs with these units. They almost always are burnt out.Mine are and just never have seemed to getting them fixed.Mine is an excellent low level listening unit.$15 was a very good price.

I disagree about the design flaw, the major reason that so many are see with burned out bulbs is due to the fact they are wire wrapped in place. Except for the odd one that some poor soul let the building electrician muck about with all the ones coming through here have the original lamps. That makes them close on 35 years old yet some still ight.

Yamaha made the decision to wire in the lamps but realizing that this would make replacement a job for someone with the right abilities, they wired them as series pairs. Thus you have two 12 volt lamps in series across at max a 22V supply. WHen you derate a 10,000 hour MTBF lamp that much the life expectancy becomes more like 40,000 hours. All the original lamps were Stanley 10,000 hour lamps.

thanks fo all the help, i'm getting the bulbs today and i'll try my first diy job, hopefully i won't screw it up.
