1" Horns: Altec 811b/511b, QSC waveguide or other?

I'm contemplating building a pair of serious 2-way home hifi speakers based around a pair of 15" JBL 2235H subwoofers (used in the the 4430 monitors and B380 sub cabinets) and 1" compression drivers.

As far as horns go, I'm not trying to break the bank, and so I've been looking at Altec 511B and 811B Sectoral horns (common as dirt), as well as the QSC 152 waveguide used in the Econowave Deluxe.

- Can anyone comment on the choice of one or the other?
- Am I missing some other good contenders that can be crossed over at 1000-1300hz and can readily be found under $200 a pair?

The Emilar "bowtie" 800hz horn sounds great IMO and looks VERY cool. I found a pair for 25 bucks on ebay, Jammin Jeresy sells them pretty cheap.

IMO the Altec 811 and 511 sound about as good as any horns; after many years of experimenting with various horn flares including Altecs, JBLs, McCauleys, EVs, Klipsch and Klipsch Pro, PAudio, Edgar saladbowls and others I ended up back with 811s, 511s and the bowties.

Did you check out the Econowave thread for builds using that driver? I know they did a lot there with JBLS; I built a set with LE14s, but the 15" may not go high enough.

If they did work with that driver, there will be a lot of good info there for you.

I would also endorse the Radian 475PB drivers as being VERY good as well- I use them in the ones shown in my avatar. Real smooth sounding, works exceptionally well with low electronic xover points too. Spec at PE.

Radian 475s do sound very good IMO; I heard them sounding very nice in Tom Danley's home system several years ago. And they're made in California too.

I built something very similar, JBL 4507 box, aprox. 5 cu. ft., loaded with JBL 2235H. Top end is the QSC 152 with B&C DE 250 and the Ewave recipe crossover. Worked very well. I think you will be very pleased with such.

The QSC 152s are not available at the moment though, unless something has changed recently.

DJnagel posted a ways back that it was available under a different part number?

Its been a while, but that part number looks awful familiar.....
