2 amp variac. Good enough for fisher 400 (200 watts)

I found a modestly priced variac for sale. It can do what I would like but is rated for 2 amps. Off 110 volts 200 watts translates to roughly 1.8 amps. Thats pretty close to the max rating. Do you think the variac would be a good choice for me. Or should I hold out for a beefier one.

I'm mostly concerned with it running very hot.

Any opinions are greatley appreciated

My power conditioner displays current draw. The 400 draws 0.6 amp whether at idle or playing at a good clip.

I use a 2A variac with my similarly-sized office amp, and it gets slightly but insignificantly warm after ~4-5 hours of use. Frankly, I think you'll be fine. The amp has a 2A fuse, my variac has a 3A fuse.

I keep a 10A variac at home, which I trust with bigger amps. Both are Superior Electric Powerstats.

Hmmmm so it seems this one may work for me. It is also a Superior electric powerstat. Probably the same as yours Jon S.

I like this one because it looks rather compact compared to others. But I also hesistate because I have wanted/needed a varaiac for other larger things. Like an ALL tube westinghouse TV and I think my larger nordmende also draws more current.

This is another one I found. I'd buy it right now but the fact it has a 5 k pot makes me think it's not a true variac...... This might get me in trouble but take a look and tell me what you think. It says it can do 2.25 amps so it would suit my needs. And looks very compact.

Making choices is Hard :|

That one there looks like a 5k pot sharing the same shaft as a variac. But it looks like an awkward setup - I'd try to acquire a standard "packaged" variac instead, which will require much less effort to set up, and will cost about the same. The 10C model number suggests that it is the same internally as what I have for my office - which is an L10C. If you search on that auction site (for powerstat l10c) you'll find one listed (not mine).

did I mention I love this community of people here on AK? :D

Sure enough shortly after posting this thread I received a private message from another member offering me a very low price on a 2.25 variac. And I jumped all over that offer.

GO AK!
Cheers,
Rudy

P.S. I never mention names because I don't always know if people want their names mentioned
