A Few Of My Favorite Things.....

Well, I read somewhere you made a birch case, so do you know how to work with veneer and dense particle wood?
The reason a lot of expensive speakers use MDF and particle board is because those have much better acoustic properties than regular plywood. You'll notice when you get some good speakers that the CS-99s will sound hollow compared.
Get a pair with good drivers with bad cabs and reveneer the cabs.
You can find a not-so-great condition set for around $200(+$100 shipping)
Veneering is easy as cake if you are patient.

Look in your local craiglist and bulletin board pages to.

Good speakers are worth the money.

I got my first set for $200 locally, and the second set was parts all purchsed individually off ebay and I assembled them and built custom crossovers for them using expensive capacitors. About $215 total with shipping.

Yes, Im almost done reveneering my 16.5. Ive spent the majority of the day doing it. Off school today for whatever reason. Soon I'll post pics. I don't want to do more veneer work though. ITS SO F***ING EXPENSIVE!!! $70 for an 8'x3' sheet. :sigh:

Also, even a good pair of Advents or KLH, maybe some ARs would sound more refined than the CS-99s. Maybe not as loud, but nicer yes.

Also Henry, I noticed you said the CS-99s took 150 watts each?
Specs say they can only take 80 watts each.
I would worry, because your receiver may have something wrong with it.

Here is an old thread with some info on the CS-99/CS-99A.

I know, I was kind of worried about that too. Im taking it in to have it serviced fairly soon to "Alpha Audio" or some name like that that's around my place. The guy there has a really good reputation.

Good deal, it may need new caps, but I am sure you could do that, just takes basic soldering skills.
However, the damping factor on the 16.5 is so high, it may just be the 16.5 can run them harder than regular receivers...I dunno, we will see.

The lights on the display start to sort of dim when the meter goes up to 150 too. It should easily be able to turn the cs99's into a ruined smoking pile. The sound is amazing though, and it definately drives the speaks harder than my pioneer did.

.....so much about vintage audio at age 15?

Henry, you're 15? I am incredibly impressed about all your knowledge. And that can tolerate all us old fogeys around here!

:D

Rgds,

Good luck on the re-veneering - I wish I had the guts to do my first ever veneer job on a TOTL vintage piece! It looks great!

My dad taught me how to do woodwork. With the veneering, just cut a piece slightly wider than the wood you are putting it on, smear wood glue all over it evenly with a newspaper, and clamp it. Then cut it to fit, sand and stain. Its not rocket science. Almost anyone could do it. Try it.

The only problem I have is how expensive the veneer is.:sigh:

And yes, I put up with most people on here OK. After I come home from soccer practice(well the season ended a little while ago) I need to come home and relax and focus on my addicting hobby.

I'd say - I just happened to notice that you joined in Oct 06, and here two months later you have 550+ posts. At that rate, you will BE AudioKarma soon!:thmbsp:

Sorry, dudes, BTW, the SX-1010/x3x series looks way better than the later x50 and x80 silver series. Not that they don't look good, but black(out) and blue rules!

Cubdog, haven't you noticed, he makes a thread about everything he wants to know, and he reads the replies, the best way to do it.
Why would I notice something so obvious? I do the same and with almost 3000 posts he stills knows more than I do. Good for him.

It would be a waste of wattage to put cornwalls on that unit...IMO
How so? Good power is never wasted, bad power maybe. Good power, good speakers equal good sound.

ok ok, thats enough everyone. I do my hobby because I think its fun and I like having the satisfation of a good job well done. Thats why I reveneered the 16.5. If you think Im getting annoying by postin a lot, I'll shut up. I dont like flattery, its annoying. Im actually kind of wierd, I like audio too much. Im serious. Im not some sort of a superhero. Stop trying to make my out as one. I did not say this to be funny.

Nobody accused you of being anything lieka super hero, we are only surprised a 15yo knows how to veneer and about different units of various models.

It is like slapping someone when you tell them you don't like their flattery(which what cubdog said was NOT)
He praised you, graciously accept that praise and hush. Telling someone their praise(which is an opinion) offered to you is rude.

If someone tells me I did a nice job, or says "wow, you know that" or such, I can only be happy my efforts are recognized.
I love audio as much as anyone, I started when I was 12yo and owned tons of stuff be the time I was 13yo. So I think I have a small deal of experience.

When a set of cornwalls can run perfectly on a low powered unit, it is a waste of wattage to put them on a monster.

Could I be any clearer?

Yep, seeing a young person who knows a lot makes me feel like that maybe, just maybe, there's hope for us yet, that you're not ALL a bunch of sullen, semi-illiterate hoodlum slackers....
