A sad example of the real risks of ordering from Japan

Dude, as one who has been here a couple times, both giving and receiving, I hurt for ya.

Think of this piece, once running, as your survivor, and enjoy it in the Wabi-Sabi nature of the country of its origin.

Would removing the knobs help avoid that?
Removing the knobs would have helped but like Jim said, Buyee only does so much and that's it.

The knobs and speaker binding posts are the issue. I have requested multiple times to have them pull the volume knob but they aren't able to accommodate. May be time for us to revisit that request again. Did you/could you mention to Buyee that removing the knobs likely would have prevented the damage? They have no problem removing platters from turntables and separating in the same box. You would think they could handle the knobs.
I have asked in the past for special handling on dust covers for turntables, but they insisted on leaving the dust cover and hinges attached to the TT and guess what? The dust cover was cracked at the hinge and plinth.

Can you post pictures of the box and foam? I am curious what that all looks like. The bubble wrap then expansion foam is standard packing procedure from Buyee. But your description doesn't sound like Buyee - the units are generally very snug in the box due to that expansion foam filling in all the gaps.
Yes! weekend project but I will take some pictures and post here. Thx!

Can you replace the glass with a piece of polycarbonate (aka Lexan) or plexiglass? Easy to cut and drill
I could have used Lexan but unfortunately all of the graphics and screenprint is adhered to the inside of the glass and that would be removed once the glass in taken off. Thankfully I was able to buy a proper reproduction from eBay (thanks @Magnus Back ) and will update this thread once it arrives.

Pisser. Poor shipping really pisses me off.

C-2301? I’d love to hear one. Does it work?

I’ve had the simplest of requests ignored by sellers. The dust cover removal is one, then the “please remove the platter and pack it underneath the turntable”, etc.

Fingers crossed this seller can safely package that glass to withstand careless handling.

Here it is sans glass. All the backlights work! It was quite the undertaking as the washers and pretty much everything was stuck to the glass with heavy duty adhesive and glass everywhere (still is)! There's no way I would have been able to save the original screenprint. Good news....it works! Pots and switches will need the treatment, but I've been running it through its paces, and it sounds fantastic! The large knobs all took a beating, and I'll need to work on them at a later point. Just waiting on the replacement faceplate (thanks again @Magnus Back and the eBay seller) and will update this thread then.

Here are some forensics of the original box. The large box on the right is what was used and the box on the left was used to ship my 907MR which arrived safely a few weeks ago. You can see where the three large knobs hit (or continued to hit) the inside and outside of the box in transit. I suspect once the glass broke, it acted like a course agent to chip away at the anodized aluminum knobs. Not much I can do now but move forward with restoring this unit physically.

what many sellers/packers fail to realize is the completed package must be able to sustain a drop on any side from 24 inches onto a hard concrete floor.
Usually means 3 inches of foam on the ends and front and back with no load placed on any glass surfaces.

It certainly adds to the cost but any high value fragile items I buy from Yahoo Japan I use a broker (Rinkya in my case). Stellar packaging, custom cut foam, tight double boxing with thick styrofoam sheets in the outer box to insulate the interior box, thick custom boxes, lots of fragile and direction arrow stickers. Over 50 shipments, most fragile, and zero losses or damage. For rare items it is the only way to confidently get your item safely to the US. They will pack to your specifications. They do use FedEx so it is clear the packaging makes a difference.

That can even happen in location to location in USA. It's all in the packaging.

Bought a darn near new, seldom ever used, vintage, M- TT once, that was stored in a closet. A little vintage treasure!!
I had comms with the seller, an older fellow, and told him how to package it. Nothing intense, just a basic but safe, easy way, to do it. He said OK.

Know what he did? >>> He just set the entire TT a box that was ' bigger ' than the TT and sent it. YEAH!!!
MAXIMUM SMASHED. I got my money back without any argument.

Ya gotta wonder... an absolutely loose TT in a box that's larger than the TT, not that that matters, with dust cover attached. Wasn't on when it arrived.
It was a smashed, cracked, "gear adrift" disaster.

Use to work at UPS ages ago and there's a "slave master with whip" standing nearby cussing at loaders to hurry and load up the trucks. The original plan is to look at the address label and load accordingly. After the cussing and screaming, no one cares. Loaders get angry and throw packages and stomp them at times in front of the supervisor who also doesn't care. Was there one day. Have had fedx also deliver and damage items. Same with Usps. This is why I refuse to purchase high end items requiring delivery. Won't chance it.

Bizzare!

It powers on but it's going to be a chore to clean up all the glass as there's hundreds of razor-sharp shards of glass to deal with. I'm hoping to get that done this weekend and give it a proper test to make sure it works.
Vacuum cleaner is your friend, along with small, long-handle brush. DO NOT use compressed air, for obvious safety reasons!
