A weird post, have you played with your ears?

Some times when I am listening to music I put my fingers behind my ears and move them around. You would be surprised at the way your ear reflects the sound into your inner ear with these changes. It helps me understand why one would say "thats too bright" or "not enough treble". Sometimes I find an ear position that sounds better to me than my "stock" ear posistion. I should invent a device that goes behind the ear to help reflect the sound better. It could be adjustable. I know, I am weirder than this post. I can't be the only one. Am I? If I am, try it. Let me know what you think. This probably should have been in another forum, but I picked this one. Woops. I only listen to vintage.

I see where you are coming from, when I cup my ears slightly the midrange tends to get the biggest boost.

I couldn't agree more Rob!

That is why we all have such varying likes and dislikes as far as sound is concerned.

You're my new hero, Rob. Wifey-poo and I were discussing this last week as I told her how different things sounded when I was listening to tunes through my Sansui/Acoustic Energy setup one night and I started moving my ears around. The first time it was by accident as I had an itch. It's very humorous to watch her do it. I'm glad I'm not the only "ear-kook" here.

I was gonna start a thread like this, but I thought I'd get banned or something.

I think there was a product out some years ago that fastened to the ears to provide an effect like cupping your hands behind your ear. I don't remember the name of the product.

you have to quit pulling on your ears!!!!! didn't your mom tell you "keeep that up and you'll go deaf"

Bet if I dug thru my old audio rags I could find an ad for them too. Imported from Japan, they had a headband and put "cups" behind each ear. Not uncommon to see band or choir directors cup one hand behind an ear to focus on an area they want to hear clearer.

I have been thinking about posting it for a while now. My wife shakes her head at me.

It's kind of scientific, isn't it?

I'm guilty! I used to do the "hands behind the ear" thing if the ambient background noise was bothersome. I actually made a neat little substitute out of cardboard, that would sit behind my head on top of the chair where I sit and enjoy my tunes. Did the same thing as the hands, but much more comfortable!

Thank God, I can now come out of the proverbial closet now that I know there are others. I always just thought I was developing super powers when doing this.:smoke:

Chewing gum, a wad behind the ear. It worked wonders for this man...

Our ears are highly directional, more so at some frequencies than others. If you use an audio test disk, I'll bet that clarity at the higher frequencies alters if you turn your head. Holding your head straight and bending your ears has much the same effect.

The Victorians were into the science of sound in a big way. Without electronics, they designed ear trumpets for the partially deaf that were shaped both to amplify sound at speech frequencies and by not responding to sound from the side, reduce background noise.

Makes good sense to me...

So what would be ideal ears, big, small, parabolic?

Mine are kinda f'd up. Surfer's ear on the left and wrestler's ear on the right (slightly califlowered). The crossover probably need to be rebuilt too.
