Album storage solutions? Photos, please.

Anyone out there build your own (or have custom order) record storage? I have a whole wall that I am going to have fitted with built-ins but I am looking for ideas. Even non-custom solutions might suit my needs. Personally, I am thinking about heavy-duty drawers for my vinyl - that way I can flip through my records (there's something magical about the process). But I am not totally against vertical bookshelf type storage. My equipment will be in the same wall (one background system with bookshelf speakers - and my new hifi system that I have started building).

PICTURES would be greatly appreciated.

(I also posted this in the DIY section - hope I'm not breaking any rules!)

Application of the albums, vertically placed, to the "shelf" item of furniture.

As long as they're not in direct sunlight, don't get caked over with dust, dirt or other detritus, aren't exposed to moisture or excess humidity, I'm pretty sure they'll be OK.

I like to keep them out of the way, up near the ceiling. These are sturdy shelf brackets from Home depot, some particle board shelving, and some big screws going into each stud. Very strong, and I've added a molding at the bottom of each shelf so that the LPs don't fall out in case of an earthquake. You can go all the way around the room if you have that many LPs. It's not the best for quick access though, you need to keep a step ladder handy.

The only earthquake I have to worry about is my mother-in-law's love. 2112 - GREAT piece of vinyl, IMHO!

I'm using a desk + shelf system attached to the wall...sorry about the quality, it's kind of dark in here :smoke:

I'm not even plannign on lights in my room - who listens to music with the lights on anyways? Thanks for the shot.

This was covered within the last month I believe.

Do a search for it, and there is an Ikea shelf unit in it that can be had from 2x3 cubes to 5x5 cubes, that can hold LOTS of records. (I'm planning on 2 of them, 4x4 at about 1000 record each IIR)

Drawers will be problematic or very expensive.

If you use say 18" drawers then they would only be supported properly if opened about 12" unless you use a full extension slider in which case you will need two sliders ($$$$) per drawer side to handle the huge weight of 100 or so albums. Also drawers will only be useful from about the height of your waist to the height of your elbows any lower and you will be stooping and higher and you will have a hard time reaching them to flip.

That will limit the number of LP's you can store.

Also LPs should be stored vertically and tightly packed to help prevent warp-age. I like about 1-1.5" of finger room in a 24" wide shelf that holds approx. 110-120 albums. Maybe even a little tighter.

Use a shelf with the edges rounded so that a sharp edge does not wear on the LP cover as it is pulled out. Make sure the shelf extends slightly past the LP cover I use 13".

If you paint inside the shelves wait 5 times the paints drying time before putting an album on the shelf to help prevent an LP from sticking to the paint.

Here are some photo's of a shelf I have in my office that holds approx 750 Lps in plastic covers. The shelf was made by modifying an existing shelf that was made to store magazines.

If you live near an ikea, have a look around there.
I hate going into ikea, but some of there shelving is pretty much perfect for vinyl.

I hear lots of nice things about Ikea's Expedit shelves. 3 sizes, 4 finishes, and lots of shelves that are just about the perfect size for records. I wanna look at 'em after the move to see just how nice they are.

After the initial hoopla at AA, I bought one of the 4 x 4 versions of the Expedit. It is heavy as all getout, but easy to assemble and quite sturdy. I have to share it with some of my wife's stuff, but it does an admirable job of holding records. It is worth considering the addition of a backstop of some sort to facilitate keeping records neatly aligned. I have been too lazy to do this to date.

Herewith, a couple of poor photos showing my Expedit shelving.

I have what I consider to be a unique idea for record storage; sorry no pics. I was driving by someone remodeling a building there was a fridge sitting outside. The wheels started turning and the fridge came home with me. Now I don't like the idea of records hogging up any space in my listening room. I removed a window on the back of my listening room and installed the fridge carcass. No door, no motor, original shelves all removed and what I have left is an insulated, waterproof box that holds approx 400 records and takes no space since it's mounted on the outside of my building. I get favorable comments on it all the time so I guess I must've done a nice job. I even use the old light that was in the fridge. I was able to fit 3 shelves in it. The outside really doesn't look bad at all. It's on the backside of my listening building where I hardly ever go so it's not an eyesore. I know it sounds like a bubba from the backwoods setup but it works for me and I wouldn't mind having another one.

Here you go

The first photo is a "before". I have a closet in our finished basement that holds my records and camera gear. I had the records in storage boxes on wire shelves, but that doesn't provide easy access.

I decided to build some shelves. They are made of birch and oak ply with a 1x2 facing, all coated with polyurethane varnish. There are three four foot units, each with four shelves. The top two are for 78's and the bottom two are for LP's. I'm currently building shelves to fit on top to hold 45's and RTR's.

The units are screwed to the walls to prevent tipping. Since the photo, I've completed shelving my records. I'm about 85% full.

The center photo shows about half the record boxes stacked in the den, waiting to be shelved.

get yourself an old phono console off CL and use the furniture for storage ala:

I use one of the Expedit units for Ikea. Works like a charm. So much so that I will be getting another in the near future.

Ok, so far I need Ikea Expedit's, a fridge and that too cool Robert Mitchem album.

I wanna see picks of the fridge!!

I have a digital cam but for the life of me I can't post pics. I can rebuild an entire house from the concrete in the cellar floor to the top brick on the chimney but my computer still makes me look like a rank amatuer. I'd love to show pics of my fridge/album storage.

looks to me like Mitchum is self medicating pretty heavily in that album cover pic-- booze, nicotine, and uh...um, sex. what secret pain is he hiding from?

I may be in need an off-site storage locale for an archival, backup copy of the Mitchum, if you catch my drift :-)
