Having loosely followed Wayne Gretzky's historic career, when you could catch a game on the radio, never thought I would ever see his record surpassed. Quite an accomplishment for Ovechkin to pass a record that stood for decades.

WOW! Kudos to this high scorer, and he ain't a "Spring Chicken" any more"(39). A lot of goalies must really hate him!

But as far as age is concerned, he doesn't hold-a-candle when it come to this aspect of playing, as Gordie Howe was 52 when he finally hung up his skates.

Not taking anything away from Alex, as the calibre of players has really increased over the years, but for staying power, I don't think Howe's record will ever be matched in age.

Met Mr. Howe several times (spending some time together), and he was a true gentleman and humble in attitude...cept in the corners when he was playing! This I heard first hand from, his opponents.

I like how everyone in that thread mixed the respect for the legends with the excitement for what Ovi’s doing at his age. When I’m curious how his numbers stack up on a given day, I peek at NHLDB | NHL Stats & Leaders, Pre-game H2H, Line Combinations since it keeps quick tabs on goals, points, and standings without digging around. It makes it easier to follow the ripple effect a record-breaking season has on the league.
