Anyone excited about the 2026 F1 season?

Anyone else excited to see how this season goes down after the big rules changes?

Personally I am not a fan of the whole hybrid thing but the big changes have potential to really mix things up. Granted the "big 4" seem to still be on top after FP1. I didn't watch FP2, no DVR for us means watching live or hoping to catch a rebroadcast from SkyF1.

Holy smokes do things look bad for Aston Martin!! The damn engine shakes so much it is shaking parts off the car and damaging the battery pack. And let's not forget causing harm to the drivers.

It would be nice to see the new Cadillac team do well this season. With Ferrari power behind them, powertrain reliability should not be too much of a worry.

And does anyone have any insights on the whole Merc "compression ratio saga"?? Allegedly they came up with a way for the motor to pass a room-temp test yet produce a slightly higher compression ratio when hot. I have yet to hear any details on just how they are supposed to be doing this.

I've been an avid fan for several years.

Freaked out by Apple TV:
This year, in the US, coverage was switched from ESPN to Apple TV. In previous years, ESPN just passed-on the coverage actually provided by Sky Sports network (UK). I used the ESPN app on my TV streamer where ESPN would archive the coverage for after-the-fact, on-demand watching. So I could watch all the SkyF1 coverage when I wanted. No one cares about F1 in the US, so I could watch a Sunday race on Tuesday and not worry about any spoilers. I'm not enough of a fan to get up in the middle of the night to watch live coverage.

During the events, the F1 organization (Liberty Media?) themselves provide the video feed with cameras everywhere, leaderboard graphics and car sounds but no commentary - and it's well done. This "F1 feed" is provided in real-time during the events to various networks around the world (e.g. SkyF1) and those networks overlay live audio commentary in appropriate languages. F1 themselves also provide their own coverage with overlay commentary in English with their own on-air personalities. In prior years, the F1 coverage was only available online (computers, smart phones), blocked from watching on TV streamers or cable systems.

Apple TV is now providing coverage with the F1 commentary and also with the SkyF1 commentary. They also provide archives of both so you can watch later - although it took awhile to find the SkyF1 archives as they are presented differently in the Apple interface.

So now, we have a choice in the US.

I have in the past not liked the F1 coverage much and really liked the SkyF1 coverage. I guess I'm in the minority on that because a lot of online reviewers prefer F1 to Sky.

But last night I watched FP1 (Free Practice 1) with F1 coverage and FP2 on SkyF1, I found the SkyF1 coverage to be more informative, with more racing expertise, better pit-lane coverage, more of their own on-site cameras beyond the F1 feed and just more fun to watch. The F1 personalities almost annoy me for some reason or at best seemed boring to me. Also, since F1 coverage is tied to F1 management while SkyF1 is a paying customer, SkyF1 might give more independent and honest coverage of controversial issues.

So I have been freaked out since October worrying about the Apple coverage until I finally confirmed just last night that SkyF1 coverage is there and archived on Apple TV. Although some of the SkyF1 between-event coverage I like (e.g. Ted's Note Book segments) that I have previously watched via ESPN seem to be missing on Apple. (Time to send some feedback / requests.)

So first world problem solved (mostly).

I should add, that a lot of F1 fans in the US are not happy that they have to get a paid Apple TV subscription to watch F1 while in the past, they watched on ESPN which is on all the cable and satellite networks. I cut the cord awhile ago so I'm not as concerned with that.

Another opinion: Over the last few years, the "Drive to Survive" show on Netflix (and now the "F1" movie which I liked) have made F1 racing more popular in the US and resulted in 2 new races added in the US in addition to the existing Austin, TX event. I am not thrilled with some of the resulting hype. I think many new US F1 fans are more into the celebrity glitter and spectacle of F1 but less interested in the actual racing and I think the celebrity glitter and spectacle is being promoted by F1 mangement. I think the new Miami and Las Vegas "race tracks" are horrible tracks - especially the Miami which is in a parking lot. The track in Austin, where F1 has been coming for years is a proper race track.

Anyway, on to the racing and @RVT1K 's OP.

Hybrid: I agree and last year (during SkyF1 commentary) Martin Brundle opined that since the 2026 cars are using "sustainable fuels" which are carbon neutral (synthetic fuels are) that F! should get rid of the hybrids and go back to ICE. Interesting. (Probably an opinion you won't hear on F1's own coverage.) I noticed some strange stuff going in the practices, something like going more slowly into turns (than before) to charge the battery to get more power coming out of the turns. 50 / 50 ICE / Electric split makes for strange race car driving I guess. More stuff for the drivers to understand, strategize and deal with.

Aston Martin: Except for Alonso, I'm not a big fan of that team but still sad to see the problems they're having. I see Adrian Newey having to explain things but isn't he more of an aerodynamics guy rather than an engine guy. I guess he's the boss now.

Cadillac: I think it will be a year or two for them to get really competitive - I think they say the same. Haas (the other "American Team") never did get very far from the back after several years so I hope Cadillac does better. Will be interesting when the get their own engine.

Merc: I have not been following the Merc shenanigans. I thought I heard somewhere that Ferrari also have some slightly-bend-the-rules stuff going on. Part of the game I guess, especially with the all new cars.

Ferrari and Red Bull looking good so far in the first 2 practices but McLaren seemed to have problems.

Anyway it's looks to be an interesting season. Looking forward to it.

I am more interested this year than at any time in the past few decades.

New changes, new teams, better coverage.

I wrote out a response, and it disappeared after I tried to post it. Not going to bother with that again.

I believe the F1 teams that also have experience in WEC/IMSA will have an advantage. They've been using this technology already.

It'll be interesting to see how things go after teams get settled with the new regulations and technologies involved.

Not really. It is on Apple TV and I’m not so I’ll get used info from BBC news and my brother since he has a-tv.

Sorry Fernando’s ride sux
Nice to see we have 4 top teams

Seems we have 5 slower teams, based on first two qualies.
And 2 strong mid pack players.

BBC did talk about the new age of celebrity in F1 and a bit about the younger demographic now enjoying the sport.

My neighbor teaches high school and he hears mention of F1 on a regular basis.

Formula 1 fan since the Jim Clark / Graham Hill / Stirling Moss / Jack Brabham / etcetera era here. First 'live' TV watching was in the 80s though - most races were in Europe then and these were live on TV about 10:30 Sunday nights in Australia. In the US I used to enjoy the commentary on the NBC coverage when they had the rights (ESPN was an extra cost cable option that did not appeal to me). After NBC lost the rights, I subscribed to F1 TV for many years and was happy with the coverage, archives and commentary. Now that it is on AppleTV I will save the $87ish yearly cost as I am already an Apple subscriber. Still alternating between the official F1 and the SKYF1 commentary to see which I prefer. Years ago I used to watch some SKYF1 programs when I could so I am familiar with some on their commentators already. Both F1 and Sky also have Youtube videos of interesting pre-race, post-race and technical content. Also, on Youtube, look for Peter Windsor's F1 analysis - he has loads of F1 background and gets some great tech boffins on from time to time.

If you don't have AppleTV and don't want to subscribe just for F1, there is an F1 channel on Plex TV which usually has the latest race within a day or 3. It also has lots of historic races and such as well. Plex is a free app on Roku and on your computer (probably FireTV as well). The F1 channel may be on PlutoTV, Roku live TV, Vizio free channels and others too.

Finally, the 2026 rule changes are a huge and results are still bit un-predictable. After P1, P2, P3 and qualifying, it looks like Mercedes were sand bagging as people have been saying. Let's see how reliability, ongoing car development and driver racecraft play out over the season. I was not a Max Verstappen fan during his early years but have become more impressed with his ability to get the best out of a car. Despite his qualifying problem in Melbourne, I think the team will get on top of the technical glitches pretty quickly and within a couple of races Red Bull will be there with Mercedes. Mclaren and Ferrari are only fractionally behind Mercedes too and we should have a good season with many winners.

I think it will take a season or 2 for Cadillac to get the experience to be a contender. Who knows how good their own power unit will be. Let's see.....

I know two other people who watch F1. Or I should say used to watch. Neither one is subscribing to Apple.
So you spend years gaining interest in F1 in the US and then reward everyone by hiding the racing behind a subscription?
I have my way of watching -SkyF1- and will continue to do so without joining the cult-of-Mac. But I hope the US audience tunes out en mass. It would serve them right.

I watched FP1 and all of qualifying and will be watching the race later tonight. I hope things go better during the race than they have so far. How many incidents were there involving stuck cars over the past couple of days? We'll see how things play out but so far I see waaaaaayyyyyyy to much attention being paid to the charge level of a freakin battery. Ditch all of that nonsense and let them run turbos and methanol.

The SkyF1 commentary team is pretty good for the most part although they could ditch a couple of people and I wouldn't miss them. Bernie Collins, on the other hand, is a fantastic addition and she has great insights and a great ability to explain things. But I do miss the Hobbs/Matchett/Varsha team from years ago.

I have yet to hear any real, concise information on the "compression ratio saga". Just rumor/allegations/and innuendo. I'm fairly sure that there isn't an engine on Earth where the compression ratio doesn't change slightly as the engine heats up. Maybe it goes up and maybe it goes down but it does not stay the same.

This looks pretty cool:

(from Apple TV website)

Viewers can follow every moment of the race with a Multiview experience, watching up to four live feeds at once.3 They can easily get started with a one-tap, preconfigured Multiview layout for every team, or if they prefer even more personalization, they can customize their own Multiview and choose which feeds they’d like to follow.

Still bit in-predictable? Really? I’d go with nearly unknown with only 1 race qualifying done so far and massive (Aston Martin hopes) improvements to be dialed in during the first have of the season at least. All we know so far is some teams did a better job of designing and building to the new spec, others are way behind and some haven’t shown what they have, yet.

hope the US audience tunes out en mass
Doubt this will happen. There is a strong iDevice preference in the US, 58% vs scraps for Android, unfortunately.

I wish they would get on with the racing and stop the chat; the first 30 minutes of the program is just talk.
It would be nice if they could discuss the technology, but it is propriety team info and the cars get covered when prying eyes are around. I like to see the tech but not before a race that starts so late EST that it damn near ends during EDT. Do the discussion before the early afternoon starts in the US.

We are watching on Apple TV right now. The pictures is beautiful. The course looks fantastic. This is just a fabulous thing to sit and enjoy.

Yes! The cars look to be much quicker when overtaking and based on today's race at least we might see more competition during the race. I think it's going to take five or six more races before we see things settle in, and I hope the reliability and predictability of the cars increases.

I think the best performance this weekend came from Kimi Antonelli's engineering team after they rebuilt his car between P3 and Qualifying. I thought he'd be starting from pit lane after that crash.

It turned out to be a fairly interesting race.

Oscar!! W.T.F.??? Well he wasn't the first to crash out before a race started and will not be the last. Still a tough way to start a season where every point will be important.

I'm not sure if Ferrari had enough pace but I wish they had pitted under the VSC and made it a little closer.

It was great to see Cadillac on the track and I just read it was a steering wheel issue that caused Bottas to retire the car and preventing both from finishing.

Merc did a great job in preparing a package for this season. And yes it was an amazing feat to get Kimi out on the track in time for qualifying after bashing the car up so badly.

The Honda/Aston Martin debacle continues. At least both cars made laps and Stroll did a lot more than I was expecting after his comments on the vibrations being like getting an electric shock.

But he gets all the extras for accomplishing this task at his home GP.

Racing is full of things like this.
Hadjar did it last year at the same track although that was wet.
Didn't someone crash out of the lead of the Indy 500 on the last couple of corners?

We'll see what China brings us.
