What's the difference between the AU-555A & AU-5500? Is one considered better then the other? If you had to keep one which would it be?

While I'm at it, I'm sure this question has been asked in the past but what does the AU stand for?

I always assumed AU was Amplifier Unit. Don't know for sure though.

Can't help with the other question, as I have only had the AU-555A. Nice sounding amp.

Personally I like the series of *900 and AU 2200/5500 series. I have used AU 555A before and prefer the AU 2200.

Well the topology for sure. Haven't dug into it. But The 555a uses a real old-school single rail voltage system as does the 505, 777. It is also capacitor coupled and uses all NPN output trannies - a so called quasi complementary output. I would imagine the 5500 is dual rail (diff. amp), direct coupled, and full complementary - in short a modern amp ;-)

The old cap coupled amps do have a special sound to them. I don't know if it is better per say, but very musical and open. I like them a lot.
