I picked up this new old stock cd player mechanism and the only identifying part I can find is the Sony KSS-121A laser.

Anyone have any idea what player it goes to?

There it is!!!
Page 4. KSS-121A. I think all KSS numbers are Sony. I think this one was used in earlier Sony CDP-45 and 65. I think.

There are several CDPs that use that laser.
Denon DCD - 1000, 1500
NAK OMS-3 and 30
Onkyo C-700 Integra
Sony CDP 40,45,55,65

I am pretty sure KSS parts are from Sony. I don't know for fact but from experience and from what other people say.
Several years ago I bought some KSS-151A and the outer box says Sony for SURE.

I hope you didn't pay $100+ for this part because the CDP that use this laser don't seem to be high end.

KSS are sony parts but many companies use them. There are only a handful of companies that make laser diodes compared to the number CD player manufacturers overall.

Thanks - so does that mean this entire assembly would fit in those cd players? Or just the Sony laser part which is removeable?

No, luckily I didn't :)

So does the Sony KSS-121a always fit into this exact type of assembly? Or did different manufacturers make differnet assemblies to hold the KSS-121a?

I think your question is good but difficult to answer since nobody here seems to have that the CDP with this mechanism.

Usually, the lasers like the KSS-121A is first used by Sony and other manufacturers will also use it.

I doubt the entire assembly is used in all those CDPs menitoned above, probably one brand will usually keep one design. For example the KSS-151A laser is used in MANY Denon and Sony CDP. However the tray mechanism were slightly different from model to model and probably more different from one brand to another.

Are you trying to buy this and hopefully sell it if becomes unobtanium? I doubt this has high resale value.

wsjoe: Yup, it's definately a very long shot to find someone to recognize the insides of an old cd player, but the knowledge here on AK always astounds me!

I already have the part here, but yes, it doesn't seem like there's huge demand for the part, or even the laser. No big deal though :)

Although this list is not exhaustive, there are several CDPs listed there featuring kss-121a:

ADS CD3
BRAUN CD3
DENON DCD-1000
DENON DCD-1100
DENON DCD-1500 ( I had this one, it' s a great CDP!!!)
NAKAMICHI OMS-3
NAKAMICHI OMS-30
NESCO HCD-50
ONKYO C-700 Integra
SONY CDP-40
SONY CDP-45
SONY CDP-55
SONY CDP-65

The laser pickup is made by Sony, but I'm pretty sure the mechanism is not a Sony. It resembles one that Goldstar used in an old all - in - one stereo.

I saw this same item or least the same pictures on Ebay from a guy near San Diego (Mill Valley) for $119. Item number 320427032606.

This mechanism from Kyocera DA-....CX players or from its clones (by ADC or DBX or VECTOR RESEARCH)

Sometimes in this mechanism was KSS-152A

Guiller
which is your favorite cd player?

Hi WsJoe,

I've never heard a true high-end model, like a recent Accuphase for example, and I wish I could afford something like this eventually. Of the many CDPs I've heard or had, I would pick up two: on the vintage side, my favorite is the Denon DCD-1650G (japanese version of the DCD-2560). Of the recent models, the Cambridge Audio Azur 640 C v 2 is the best sounding one of the many budget-midprice CDPs I've heard. I also have a soft spot for the quasi-vintage Cambridge Audio CD 4 SE (which I've got in my bedroom).

How about your preferences?

Wow - thanks! Impressive that you were able to recognize this part! Unfortunately, I don't seem to have the upgraded laser in mine.

Guiller - many thanks for this list. It's larger than the one I was able to cobble together.

I actually was inside a sony cdp-45 today...got it for free because the disk didn't spin. I didn't get any numbers while in there, but while the laser may be the same, the mechanism is different. The cdp-45 has a plastic "arm" where that one is metal.

The arm wasnt lowering, but I got it freed' up and working:banana:
