Always hearing about how you start to lose sensitivity to higher frequencies with age. could be true, but it also depends on what volume you’re listening at. I learned something watching this.

Yep, something that I think everyone knows, but is in yet another video like it’s news.

He did miss something in his comparison to light dimmers, … your eyes work the same way, lose color perception in dim light.

My main system doesn't have a loudness function nor tone controls. Doesn't need adjusting at low volumes.

My garage system is vintage with tone controls and loudness function but I still don't use loudness as I feel it adds too much, makes things sound worse. I'll make a tweak with the tone controls if I feel it needs adjusting. I'm not into heavy bass.

If I try the loudness function I have to adjust the tone controls lower to get it to sound right. I'll adjust the tone controls right away instead of turning loudness on and adjusting the tone controls. Why make it worse then adjust tone when I can use the tone controls right away to make it good?

I can relate to this. If I listen to music loud enough to hear all the sounds then it's too loud. I may have to address this again.

I Agree...
I have a sweetheart of a test system in the repair shop: Sansui AU11000 + Altec VoTT (studio version)
Tone controls are always set to defeat.
The critical listening system in the living room consists of a BAT pre-amp whose two sole controls are an input select, and a volume control. Luxman MB-3045 tube mono-blocks driving Klipsch Cornwal IV's. There is no option for sound shaping aside from room treatment.
I don't miss tone controls, I adjust my listening space, as needed.

Randy has a vast audience with many levels of knowledge. I imagine many people were entertained and enlightened by this video.

I think the bottom line here is you should adjust loudness or tone controls (or whatever) to what sounds good to YOU. So-called "audiophiles" shaming people for using tone controls/loudness is ridiculous.
I couldn’t agree more. I like to make my music sound like I think it should sound. Strictly my perception, because that’s really all that matters. Whatever use I make of tone controls, loudness, or any other control is for my listening pleasure. I am aware of what tone controls do to the signal, but I don’t care.
