Solid bit of kit, these.
Marked $14.99 each but I pointed out the broken switches and one torn surround and the cashier happily agreed to the price for the pair.

40+pounds each! There is a thread on AK with specs.

Phillips tweeter and HH Scott mid and woofer.

Pics of the autopsy.

Recapping the crossovers now and need to find switches followed by a woofer repair. I plan to install a baffle to rear panel brace.

Cool man!I just got my first pair of Scotts for 6.47$...only mine are just a little bigger than that Coke can...heheh.

These rock, I had a pair of them before and they are really nice speakers. You will like them for sure.

Sometimes I wish I never sold mine but I was moving so pretty much I had no choice.

Well enjoy them

Thanks, VB! I was intrigued by the 96db/1w/1m rating since I listen mainly to tubes. Right now, the JBL L36's are in the main system. Once recapped they came alive and are wonderfully detailed without being fatiguing. But there is only so much bass the 10" woofer can kick out. These were inexpensive so worth the effort to bring them back to life. :thmbsp:

I wish I could find a set of those Pro 100B's...I have an LP nook where they would reflect of off a slanted ceiling.

I'm also liking the controlled impedance feature on these Scotts...especially since I have them run parallel with some Venturi's.That might keep the load on the amp more stable.

Very businesslike looking these Scotts...not flashy but still nice looking.

Have fun with the refoam and recap Faster. :)

I hear you. I have yet to find TOTL anything at a GW. Think I will drop the one woofer off at the Speaker Doctor and let him do his magic.I have never replaced a rubber surround.

I also used to have this pair with 15" woofers!

Yikes! Mighty big driver for such a small box. :scratch2:

Progress report

I scrounged up caps to do the crossovers.

Tweeter: 3.3uf Dayton bypassed with a .01uf teflon.

mid: 15uf+.47uf+.22uf Daytons to replace the 16uf.

As the switches are broken I just soldered the leads to the negative post for flat response, no attenuation.

Unfortunately the woofer I thought was good has a 1" separation at the frame. Good enough shape to play at moderate levels for a test run.

On the left, HH Scott 196B, on the right, Infinity 1001.

Denon DP-59L, Micro-Acoustics 530MP, CNC phono pre into the Pioneer Elite VSX-39TX. Little Polk sub is off.

The Scott's are much more efficient than the Infinity's. Makes it easy to concentrate on them. That is a very nice tweeter! Clean, transparent detail with no fatiguing edge. Mids are good- vocals honestly reproduced, again good detail. Guitar picking is nice and sharp and the dcay is easy to follow.. Bass is not so hot with the leaking surround. The mid and tweeter integrate very well. These are decent loudspeakers.

Need to make a brace for the baffle to back panel. They were full of yellow fiberglass squares. I pulled out a couple, then moved the rest to evenly line the walls of the cabinet. Next I stuffed polyfill in the empty space. I will tune the amount once the woofers are up to snuff.

I look forward to repaired woofers and then tubes, baby!

More progress.

New attenuation switches installed. 3 of the 4 original were broken. Nice choice of set resistor values for attenuation- no worries of left and right drivers matching and degrading imaging. Put in 7/8" dowel as a front to back brace. Need to go buy some more polyfil.

Only thing left is new surrounds. :thmbsp:

Hi Faster,

I know this goes waaaaay back, but what type of toggle switches did you use on your 196Bs? were they the ON-OFF-ON type?
Thanks!

@JayAllen welcome to AK!

So that you're not wasting your time @Fasterdamnit hasn't posted to AK in close to 3 years now and prior to that post hadn't posted since 2016.

You'd probably be better served creating your own new thread.
