Hosiden DH-45-S fixer-upper. Tightening adjustment braces?

Got myself this pair relatively cheap. They're honestly not much to listen to, but they look great for their age — late '70s according to this page: DH-45-S

They needed a good spray of contact cleaner in the volume pots upon arrival, but now the sound is clean as a whistle. Maybe one day I'll replace the paper cones with something more modern. The remaining challenge is this:

Seems the headband clamps on the extendable adjustment braces have lost their grip over the years. These cans are heavy, and just drop out of the headband when I put them on. So basically, they're sitting on my shoulders in no time flat, rather than over the ears...

I haven't had the headband padding off yet, but at the moment the tube-shaped plastic sockets (where the braces go in) don't look like they're going to come apart easily.

Any thoughts on dismantling the headband in a restorable way, and putting some friction back into the adjustment braces?

That's Rhys Ifans in The boat that rocked/Pirate radio (2009), wearing a pair of headphones identical to mine
