These are available locally. I remember these from the 80s (I think) but am not sure.

ooooh....square drivers! There was a post on here not too long ago about those....

i dont' remember the model, but you could probably search for "square sony" and would get the right thread....

Take a look at this post.

Those aren't the same model... but you get the idea...

Check out the woofers to see where these fall in the APM heirarchy. The ones with cast basket 4 voicecoil drivers are the king of the hill while the cheap ones used a passive radiator on the bottom and a stamped frame.

Actually there are sliced one more way… mine are single VC on a 11 inch square “cone”. Sealed mid with one VC on a flat square “cone”. And mine has a round tweeter in a square grill.

Here's the authoritative site on the APM's... sorry it's in Japanese -- the pictures are in English :-)

Those APM's came in all sizes!

Have contacted the owner and he is going to get back to me with the actual model number.

Thanks to all!

You really can't tell from that picture which model thay are. I have discovered (I think) that all of the models with 'real woofers' use either 8 or 12 screws (2 or 3 on each side of the square) to attach the woofer to the cabinet and the passive radiators mostly only have 4 screws (one in each corner). Also most (but not all) of the real 3 ways were ported so if there is a port (either under the Sony badge like in the 2nd of KFA888's pictures above or at the bottom of the cabinet under the woofer) they are really 3 ways, no port means they probably are a 2 way passive radiator system.

Got the identity of these but not a lot of info. Model is APM-615. Here is a better pic. I was hoping to get a little more information on these like should I even bother? Not sure if the price is negotiable at this point.

They look very similar to my APM-690's. If you can pick them up really cheap like under $30 I would do it. I really like the sound of mine. They are in no way high end or desirable but good sounding speakers to me. Really nice bass response and smooth sound.

Bigyank,

at least your (prospective) APMs are of the bigger kind with what seems to be a nice cabinet, a square tweet' and no rotted surrounds!

APM-615... probably bore a different name depending on market - I'll see what I can dig about them later on and will keep you posted.

If you’ll notice in the picture I posted of mine above both the woofer and mid have a treated cloth surround and should be in good shape if not abused or mishandled. These seem like fairly high quality with medium weight MDF construction. Mine are rated at 200 watts max and medium as far as efficiency goes. I keep an eye out for these locally as I do like how they sound.

It does look like they are one of the ported 3-way systems with the single voice coil woofer. So they aren't one of the early exotic APMs with the 4 VC woofer but they aren't one of the cheaper 2-way PR systems either, so they are probably fairly decent sounding. If the price is right and you like the looks I'd say jump on 'em.

I took apart a pair of the cheaper passive radiator ones a few weeks back - foam surrounds were rotten. The PRs were held in with 8 screws, 2 per side.

The woofer (the smaller 4 inch square driver) had a cast basket with one VC. I put them all in storage.
