JBL L222 Disco ... What Might Have Been ...

We all make choices ... and most of us have to live with the consequences.

Yesterday I made one of those choices ... and the consequence was that I missed a pair of JBL L222 Disco speakers ... but the buyer (a friendly competitor) let me take a few pictures (I apologize for the quality ... conditions were less that ideal) ... the cabinets are in good shape except for the disintegrating bases which were exposed to water at some point.

According to info on Lansing Heritage ... the L222s were sold from 1979 to 1981 at a price of $895 to $1,030 ... each ... the 4' high 100+ lb Disco has a Max Rec Amp Power rating of 300 watts.

I had a pair this week for about 1 day.Console yourself in the knowledge that the passives and the woofers needed refoaming.Otherwise,you missed out on a very nice pair of speakers.

I'm sure they're a nice speaker and everything- I enjoyed the contemporary L-150A- but for some reason, when the manufacturer insists on putting the name disco into the model name, this is what comes to mind. Scary, I know.

They do have some bass boom to them,which I guess was appropriate for Disco music.But a quality speaker nonetheless.

The woofers and PRs were good on these ... but the money is in the L94 Lens on the Mids and the 076 HFs.

According to the JBL Technical Manual ... the L220 ... is the same speaker except it's called Oracle ... if the Disco name really bothers you.

I got a pair of L220 that I refoamed back around XMAS and i'm really not looking foward to doing anouther pair of the LE14A woofers, the passives wernt bad doing. I'm kinda slow about getting things done but I just put mine back together last night, havent had to test drive them but am courious to see which sounds better ,, Klipsch Cornwalls ot the Oracle L220's? englissa

The primary difference between Oracle and Disco is the tuning of the passive radiator, which you can do yourself.

Oracle is more extended, Disco, punchier.... :yes:

Disco and CV D-9's just go together when I think of them. Boom Shaka Laka Boom....
