I picked up my first nec cd player yesterday for $10. Sweet thrift score even though it was missing the remote.
I've been playing it pretty much non stop since I got it and can say all the stuff you read about them on AK and the web is true. So if your lucky enough to find one grab it while you can you won't be sorry. I've been judging it against my Marantz CD-67SE and Adcom GCD-575. I like them all so it's been had for me to say one is better than the other. I guess it comes down to each there own musical listening ear and taste. Something I did find in my judging by accident, that I wanted to pass along to you NEC owners missing a remote or looking for a remote for your player is that all the functions on the adcom remote for the GCD-575 will control all the same functions of the nec CD-730. So i'm guessing that there is chance this remote might work with other models of nec cd players.

I'm a huge fan of NEC CD players (and integrated amps and tuners). My collection includes models CD-420, CD-500, CD-610, CD-650, CD-607, CD-810, CD-705, and several MCS players that are rebadged NECs.

The CD-705 is my favorite. I also have had a CD-530, but sold it because I wasn't impressed with it's sound at all. I would love to track down a CD-730.

I'd love to find a CD-810 to see how it sounds compared to the 730.

Today's goodwill find. NEC cd-607. 12 bucks! Remote included.

That's a great find! Even better with the remote. Does it load CDs correctly? Sometimes the loading belt needs to be replaced on this generation.

Congrats!

Smooth as silk and loads up great. Still need to hook it up and listen but the girl's still asleep. I will update.

That's great to hear. So many of these need that belt changed out. I hope you like the sound. I sure like my CD-607.

So update... the nec sounds great. But. After functioning normally for a while,15 min. or so, the digital display goes black. Everything still works. Just lights out. Any ideas?

Thanks
Adam

Maybe a wire connector inside has come loose? I'd open it up, and check that all the wires going to the display are seated firmly in their connectors - maybe unhook them, and re-connect them to be sure. If it's not a connection issue, maybe the display is not getting the right voltage. Trace the wires from the display back to it's power supply/regulation part of the board, and see if anything looks bad/burned/out of place. A service manual would help, but I can't find one online. StereoManuals.com has this model listed, but I think you may need to shoot them a request for them to add it to the site for purchase.

Welcome to the club!! I found my NEC 705 with remote at a local thrift for $45. Had it serviced with new belts and such, Love the sound of this heavy beast. Congrats

Thanks! That 705 looks pretty slick. I'm kinda new to this and didn't know that there was so much disparity in the sound of components. But yeah sounds way better than my chintzy old one.

I have a NEC 630 and a 420. They both function and the 630 has a remote. The 420 has a good headphone input, The 630 sounded just as good as my Marantz SA-8400. I may have to sell these soon as I need to clear out some old gear. I used to have the 650 and 530 as well. NEC were good players.

Its got a headphone amp for quiet listening. It sounds great from what I remember and taboot it has a volume control for the HP amp.

Mines having sticking cd issues and nonfunctional tray issues. Unfortunately…i wish someome would make a complete walkthrough tear down and document the ins and outs of the tray system while presenting possible failure areas and fixes to rectify them. Its a Sony product at the heart thats very difficult and expensive to acquire if the call made requires the heart transplant.

Maybe I should make another YouTube video documenting the process regardless of outcome even though I will wish for success.

Any ideas I should try that i didnt mention?
