KLH 911B- Not to shabby!

I was on a mission the other week to find some cheap speakers for my garage setup. Well, I stumbled across these. Paid $10 for them, and they were still sealed in the box. After giving them a good listening over the past week and a half, these speakers are not to bad! They are a little bright, but over all they are nice little garage speaker. Anyone else have a pair?

Old thread but wanted to chime in....

yah, i run a pair of these in my kitchen. small. decent sound. $10 at a garage sale. :)

Back in 1997, I bought a pair of 912Bs at BB because they sounded better than any of the other speakers they had there including some Cerwin Vegas (I know, I know) and including the big brother 915Bs.

The 911Bs must have an 10" woofer right? The 912Bs have a 12".

I always thought they sounded very good. Nice smooth midrange and high end. Just lacking the lowest octave because of the design but still OK.

They always get a bad rap just because they are inexpensive and are later KLHs

My son has them now after I bought bunch of Advents.

I bought a pair at BB when they first brought 'em in and paid $10 for the pair.

NEW!

They are OK....

wow $10 new from BB... My garage sale price should have been $0.99 then. Haha.

They are good for what they are. i typically have my back turned to them making dinner and/or am miles away from whatever sweet spot they may have emanating for their position tucked into my cabinets. :)

Looks like they are 5 inchers... PICS:

OK yeah, it was the 910Bs that had a 10" woofer.

I looked in my "user's manual" which I still have from the 912Bs.

I had a pair of those exact speakers that I pulled the tweeters from to replace the blown ones in some other speakers. The KLHs sat around for a while, tweeterless, and I was getting ready to throw them out, but before I did, I played some bass tracks through the woofers to finish 'em. This wasn't too long ago. I feel bad about it now (they were a Christmas present when I was about 8 or 9--I'm obviously not very old), but I needed the tweeters because PE didn't sell anything with the same dimensions and I already had better-sounding speakers. I was going to keep the woofers for a DIY project or something, but I couldn't think of what I wanted to do with them. Also, they had foam surrounds, and I didn't want to put effort into DIY speakers only to have them dry rot a few years later. The only reason I feel bad is because, like I said, they were a Christmas present with my little tube amp kit that I still have.

Edit: The speakers at the top of the stack in my avatar are the KLHs. I attached the old piezo horns from my Peaveys to them, but that only made them sound terrible because of the sensitivity mismatch.

Bought these little 911 babies as mains to go with my Sony ss-mb105 surrounds, (probably could do it vice versa too) all powered by a little 40w digital amp. Sounds just as good as my prized Paradigm/NAD setup. Who would have guessed? Do yourself a favor, save a buck and go with these.

Just another comment on the 911's. I bought 2 sets at BB for like $9.99 a set. That was a long time ago, they have taken on legendary status with my family. It was a few years before we really even noticed how great they were. I had/have many speakers, currently about 15 sets, from $5 to $3,000. The $5 set from a flea mrkt, Rodgers ls34a maybe, or something. A pretty good sounding $5 speaker set, I sold em' for $2000 on ebay. I had no idea when I bought em'. The klh sounded better, side by side to me and everyone that listened. There is something kinda magical about these hooked to a 70's era Marantz that just amazes everyone the really listens. Full, balanced, just nice all around. I say the best $10 new speaker ever, imo . Buy em' if you need small and can find em'.

I'm lol because I have a set also that I purchased from BB back in the 90's. I just finally took the tweeters out of one to use on another pair of speakers. I think I'm going to add a nicer tweeter to these to see how good they can sound. Will use them in my garage also with a subwoofer.

Picked up a mint pair of these at the local thrift for an inflation adjusted price of $12. Was going to walk away from it given the label and that I found only one (in electronics) until I came by the other one in housewares. Was still not convinced due to the label but intuition told me they could sound alright and that you could never have enough for testing purposes. Turned out to be a good call - ran them thru a Technics SA-222 and they sound lovely at low to modest volumes
