My saga of the KR-9600 handles

I can fix it but good...

Several years ago (like in 2009!) I scored a KR-9600 that was in need of lots of attention.
I did a recap and upgraded the FM tuner opamp - all very worthwhile.

Here's the refurb thread:

One oddity is that it only came with one handle. Why someone removed the other will forever remain a mystery.

My first step was to but a pair of black Hammond handles that had the bar section an aluminum anodized piece and the end corners made of plastic.

Second step that I just did was to use a pair of nickel plated draw pulls from Amerock.

Here are some pictures-

I like the Amerock handles - and they were only about $17 a pair shipped.

Here's the link to them:

Now, if only I can find a long sought after CB-15 wood case for the KR-9600. Recently I read that it was only offered as an option to units that were sold to GI's in the PX's.

Those look great (and strangely familiar) FYI there is a pair of originals on the bay for sale individually (no affiliation), but make sure you're sitting down.

$79.99 shipped (and one actually sold for that) - I guess I know what to do with mine (eventually).

Looks real good Jim and wonderful recommendation Gort. If I ever go that route I'd considered these as an option. Very beefy.

Oh, I forgot to mention - the screws it came with were too long (made for a wooden draw face) and rather thin (looked like #8) so I rethreaded the handle with a 10-32 drill tap and put in heavier bolts.

I think I said in another thread that even #8 screws are sufficient if you use a good stainless screw. A plain-Jane grade 5 bolt in a 8-32 size is rated for an 85lb load, conservatively. An 18-8 or 316 stainless will be much higher than that.

Those Amerock's are very nice!. Are the ''base'' large enough to hide eventual marks left
by the stock ones?.

The base seems to be large enough (YMMV of course), I had to position the new ones so that the tiny gap is under the upper mounting location

The linked Amerock handles seem to be size 5" - do they really fit the KR-9600, or is it me who have misunderstood ? I have a woodcase 9600 and would really like to get some handles.
Thanks

sorry to try to wake this thread from the dead, but I think my question is most appropriate here.

I just got a Kenwood KR-9600 with a the wood case (lucky me - it was just given to me. Free!). However, they seem to reuse the screw holes that originally are used to attach the handles to attach the wood cabinet. I'd REALLY like to have both the wood case AND the handles. Has anyone figured out how to have both handles and the wood case.

Ideas?

Wood cases on other Kenwood components (as well as other manufacturers) attach on the bottom. If there are no holes for the case, you can likely remove some of the screws holding on the metal bottom plate and use longer screws through the case to the chassis (use a washer between the screw / bolt head and the wood case). That's how my KA-9100's case attaches.

@w1jim the link to the handles is sadly dead. Any chance you could dig up a model # or specific handles you used for this? Nice work btw

I’ll do some research - I’ve since moved the Kenwood along but I should still have a single handle I could measure.

I suspect it is the same one because it looks about identical. Let me know if you are able to find it.

Lookin' good - I measured my handle and the mounting holes are centered @ 5-1/16".
