New cloth on grills, contact cement or rubber cement?

Pretty basic question, when putting new cloth on grill frames would it be better to use contact or rubber cement? I’ve always used hot glue, but once it’s down it is down and it makes a both of a messy look on the back side. Wanted to try one of these, have both.

I use automotive headliner glue which I believe is a contact cement. Spray 2 coats 5 minutes apart let dry until tacky and apply cloth. Works well and looks neat on the backside.

Rubber cement won't hold; it's designed to be removeable. Contact cement will hold, but not if exposed to sunlight: keep speakers away from windows.

I had good results using UHU general purpose adhesive (no affiliation) letting it dry for a while before pressing the cloth on it , it's very sticky after some seconds and gives you some minutes to correct or stretch the cloth. If you use contact cement, i'd choose some transparent glue and use it as a general purpose adhesive, applying on the frame, gluing the cloth on it before it gets dry.

Thank you for the suggestions all. I think rubber cement is out. I have a gallon of contact cement and about 4 cans each of super 77 and super 90.

I thought about the spray, but thought it might be too messy. Also, I plan to apply the adhesive to the frame only, none to the grill material for obvious reasons. I thought that the spray may dry out too quickly and not be tacky long enough. Also for the spray I’ll want to spray the whole frame in one go and then stretch the fabric out. If I try to spray half way through I fear I may get some on the grill material.

so I guess it’s down to contact cement and spray. Maybe I should do some testing.

Fiber or wood if thick enough will go with staples.
Plastic or where a staple is out of the question, then contact cement and clothes pins or plastic clamps to hold down till set.

I when using the contact cement will attach cloth to wet glue on frame edge. Trim after set up with a metal straight edge.
