No AM or FM on Pioneer SX-580

No idea how to make the tuner section work but at least I can tell you how to get the case off: just take the two screws on each side of the case out and lift it off. The bottom comes off by undoing eight small screws around its periphery and one (I think) towards the middle. Handy hint: screw all screws back into the receiver once you've got the part off - saves a lot of aggravation finding 'em later.

Don't let the troops convince you that giving your girl an SX-580 risks having her drop you for the first guy who comes along with a TOTL Yorx; I use a 580 to drive a couple of New Advents and it works well enough. Anyway, she won't need more than two or three watts to get kicked out of the dorm!

Rise from the Dead.

Just wanted to throw my findings in here. I recently picked up a Pioneer SX-580, which had NO FM. Also, the indicator lights didn't work, meaning the Source, Tape Mon and I think even the Stereo light.

What I found was on the power supply board, there is a single transistor all by itself with a small heatsink. These things seem to get hot (I had burn marks on the board) and mine had opened (or something to that effect). I'm going from memory now but it was a common TIP31C or something like that. I crossed it at NTEinc.com and picked up 5 for a few bucks. Replaced it and now everything works as it should, including the FM section.

Seems to run hot, or I have also a biasing issue. Bigger heat sink might help.

Anyways, hope this helps someone out there.

sx-680?

My guess is that the 13 volt power supply is bust. I'd check fuses inside. Some used a fusible like/ small resistor 1 or 2 ohms at the output of the power supply, could be opened up.

No idea IF they are similar, but I have an SX-680 that had the same issue. I think it was a 13V supply line is what rings a bell. ANYWAY, it turned out to be the power transistor back near the tranformer.

Realizing this is a very old thread, have 2 SX580 with no power to the AM/FM section. Tested Q401 and Q501 to verify they were putting out 13.6V. Issue was the selector switch. The voltage goes through that switch. Deoxit and exercised heavily, resolved.
