RCA SA-155 as headphone amp - am I doing this right?

I had an RCA SA-155 amp laying around that I'd occasionally plug my Panasonic RP-HTX7's into, and then it dawned on me- the reason it wasn't very loud is because I was using the headphone jack in the front which really only amped the headphones a tiny bit more than my iPhone/iPad would do on their own.

So I made an adapter for the RCA speaker outputs on the amp to plug the headphones into. Now that definitely changed everything! Figuring roughly on power output at 40 ohms the phones should be getting around half a watt, and the spec sheet says they'll handle 1 watt so if I go easy on the input I should be ok.

My dumb question is- Am I doing this right?

I've got a few hours of pretty heavy use out of it this way so far and everything seems to be OK except at lower volumes on the amp there is a pretty loud white noise, which is masked at higher music volumes. I'm OK with that and it may be a result of unclean AC power or something, I don't really know.

Any thoughts from others using this amp this way?
