The settings over the last 5 years.
Nice phono preamp with those settings! Easier to set than the Musical Surroundings Phonomena II.

After tube rolling with the DS2 phono amp and Freya+ preamp for most of the day I have determined that using the Ray Select 6SN7 tubes in the Freya + and the Raytheon windmill getter 5751 tubes in the DS2 provides the best sound with the loading turned up to 350-400 ohms. This setup provides the widest and most 3D sound stage than any other combo.

The new AT-33xMLD needs a different loading than the older PTG II and the 33Sa... must be due to the new three piece body (zinc, aluminum, and polymer) and suspension. At loads below 280 ohms some voices were sibilant and occasionally a bit sharp, loads of 300 and above smoothed them out, above 350 bright piano notes and acoustic guitars also smoothed out. Going above 420-450 and electric guitar got really tweaky (overload) with a bit of honk. Anyway, the 33xMLD sounds wonderous !
Well, with lots of break in (about 35 hours now) the 33xMLD is now liking a lot less of an ohm load... 220-240 ohms now seems to be the sweet spot.

Again thx for all for your tips. And yes indeed. Unlike for example that 70's 2/4 channel JVC(Nivico/Victor) gear I have owned; my Philips receiver and amplifier don't have MM phono cartridge load etc adjustments indeed. So "dunno" if that is going to be a real issue for me using my JVC 4MD-20X MM cart on this 'Flips' gear for 2 channel stereo (only!). So maybe a separate phono pre-amp for use together with my Philips 22AH308 will be a future 'thing' / need after all. Dang this (Vintage) HiFi hobby keeps one busy indeed, but that is a good thing; and definitely not a bad thing.

I took out the Raytheon 5751 windmill getter tubes and put the JJ ECC803S tubes back in the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2. The 33xMLD really plays nice with these long plate tubes (the plates are almost twice as long as the plates in the 12AX7/E83CC/5751/7025. Much more power and the sound stage is wider and deeper. The cart with these tubes now sounds its best with the ohm load set around 220-240 (when it was brand new it liked 350-400 ohms with the 803s).

I've had the Raytheon 5751 toobs in the phono pre-amp for 6 years now. Time flies! ;)

Another egregious video. Subwoofers on. :)

My Raytheon windmill getter 5751s are very good sounding tubes, I especially liked them with my AT-VM740xML cart... my 33xMLD plays "sweeter" with a tube with a bit more power.

For me, after the phono pre-amp setup (and tubes selected), it comes down to the cartridge. In general, Audio-Technica MC cartridges sound a bit brighter than Denon MC cartridges.

Denon DL-103SA. Same LP. Same tubes, same phono pre-amp settings. Same pre-amp and amps. Both subs on. Similar recording levels, flat EQ. Same mics.

Personally, I like the warm midrange of the Denon.

Yikes! Lots of great contenders, I used A Dynavector 10x4 mkll for a long time on everything from Thorens through Systemdek, an finally Well Tempered Classic V (Transparent Audio iteration).
.
These days running a grace F9 with a Soundsmith elliptical… via an Aragon 47k stage.
Have about 5 tables, most need service so I am getting an itch…

Way past time to make the Pl-L 1000a work….
cobbled most I need, now to find time- been saying that for way to long…

Maybe a Grado wooden, but the Audiotechnica shown above…. hmmm

***Long been taken with System Synergy, time will tell…

Great thread, an thanks for sharing!

The Well Tempered offers me the value of using most any cart I want, just takes a lot of time dialing in.
And I myself made an error, hum, is more excessive than I like, I think I know my error.

***Like Zep says, nnnn no no bodies fault but mine.

Happy listening!

Now off to sorting LP’s……
