Some questions about the Sanyo TP 1010

First, I need to find a cartridge and stylus so any suggestions would be appreciated. What's on here now seems cheap and the stylus has seen better days.
Second, after many tries, I am unable to get the tone arm to drop straight down and was wondering if this has something to do with that lateral weight? I've never had so much trouble with a turntable before. Alignment with a protractor is dead on. Also balance from front to back, side to side and diagonally is perfect.
Third, it seems that the weight needed to balance the tone arm is a little heavy as opposed to my other turntables.

This is kind of a funky little turntable with a few extras which seems to only cause the user some unneeded hardships. Records sound good so far but I don't want too much weight which will eventually destroy the records over time.

Antiskate is set correctly?
I had a Sanyo at one time. Nice deck.
Should play nice w any mid range cartridge. I think I had a Shure on mine.
 
Which cartridge do you have now? Does the arm move inwards or outwards when dropped? If the anti-skating is high, it's possible that the arm will be pulled outwards when it drops.

What is your budget for a new cartridge? If you want a budget cartridge (less than $100), the AT-VM95E would be my first port of call.
 
Anti-skate can be adjusted very little, and it is at 2 which is where the weight is at. Tone arm drops to the outside. Don't know what this cartridge is as there is no name or model number. Headshell looks the same as those in pictures of this turntable on eBay. Thinking about buying a new headshell.

... and yes, it appears to be a pretty good turntable if I could just get it adjusted correctly. Records sound good even though I don't think anything has been changed or upgraded for years. Very dusty when I bought it.
 
Perhaps the anti-skating is poorly calibrated and is a lot stronger than the value of 2 would suggest. You could try setting it to 0 and see whether the arm still drifts outwards when cueing. The first photo doesn't help us to identify the cartridge as it just shows the top of the headshell.

I was thinking knock down the anti skate too. It could be run at zero & be fine.
If the arm drops inward, then increase it a bit.

Thats a pretty cool looking headshell. I wouldn't change that.

Do you have the proper brush to clean the stylus? Clean everything up before you spend $$. Save it to buy LPs. :)
 
It does look a pretty crude looking anti-skating control - not very precise if you want to set it to 1.4, for example.

I agree, the headshell looks great and should be kept, even if the cartridge is changed.
 
Picture of the cart. I have no idea what brand or model. Could be a good one just in need of a replacement.

Well, you guys know what you are talking about. I set the anti-skate to zero and the tone arm dropped straight down, Voila! and damn if records don't sound pretty good. Not a 1200 by a long shot but this table is a keeper.
 
That looks like a Radio Shack version of a Shure cartridge, but normally they had an RS on the front.
 
Is it OK to leave the anti-skate at zero? Tone arm is running smoothly through the grooves, seems like there might be some slight signs of sibilance but only on some songs. More adjustments are on the horizon.
 
Crab33 suggested this one AT-VM95E and I found it for $69.99. It says $49.99 for just the stylus so for $20 more I can get the cart also.
 
I would suggest using some alcohol to clean the top of the cueing riser and the underneath of the tonearm where it rests on the riser. If something slick got on it (like silicone fluid), it may not have enough friction to keep the anti-skate from pulling the tonearm sideways as it lowers. Also, after cleaning you might rough up the rubber pad on the cueing riser to get a fresh surface for the tonearm to rest on.
 
You could also pick up a no name version AT 3600 for around 20 bucks and it might be just as pleasing.. But if you unscrew the cartridge, it may have the model on top, and a replacement stylus might not cost much.
 
I believe you have a Shure M70 cartridge, probably with a generic N70B (spherical/conical) stylus. The cantilever angle looks pretty steep to me, or it may be just the photo.

This would be the replacement stylus (although this vendor is out of the stock):

However, you should be able to use the N70EJ elliptical on it:

I would suggest you replace the whole cartridge with the AT-VM95E (you have to buy the whole cartridge, as this stylus won't fit your Shure cartridge).

It should be OK to use the turntable with the anti-skating set to zero. Some turntables don't have any anti-skating. If if starts skipping, you will have to increase it off zero.

EDIT: If you want a cheaper cartridge with conical stylus, you should look at the AT3600L and AT-VM95C.

Yes it is an Shure M70 (a bulk Shure BOTL model, but therefore not bad).
The N70EJ elliptical stylus will fit perfectly, but tracks a little high on 1,5-3,0 grams (works best closer to the 3,0 grams).
But as @Crab33 suggest the AT-VM95E seems to a better choice as it gives probably better quality for the buck..
