i thought one day id take the woofers out of their box. i was suprised at how small the magnets and voice coil were. wow the voice coil is not even 1 inch. the magnet is only1 inch deep and 6 inches wide. no wonder it starts to bottom out on movies. you can literally hear the so called "power amp" distort through the wooofers. the muteki subs would be better active. the active version of the muteki subwoofers actually dont sound bad. i know they use the same woofers for everything. but wow. can hit the 40 hz and lower that the muteki 7500 doesnt

Is this a powered subwoofer, or a stereo? Also, post some pictures.

I looked it up. MUCH bigger than the Muteki stuff I've seen. I was thinking it was one of those shelf systems. The speakers on this thing are still cheap particleboard and plastic, right? Or is this one a little beefier? My friend used one of the Muteki shelf systems until he put together a system of vintage components (and guess where he got 'em?)

Anyway, my point is that when I hear "Sony Muteki," I don't think of quality hi-fi equipment.

The only real thing to think is are the cabs decent enough to keep for a bit of fun putting in some better woofers?
If not, sell them on for the highest price you can get for them and buy some big dirty 70's vintage speakers! If you are in to Sony, I would recommend a pair of speakers from the SS-G series :)

that is not a quality subwoofer

That quarterwave (?) type box you put the Sony driver is does look quite impressive. Well built! :thmbsp:
But, unless you have a design for a speaker enclosure based on T/S parameters of the used driver (or know how to measure them yourself and/or simulate {with something like WINisd/hornresp} a box for that) it will stay an experiment with unsure outcome..

The "Tangband TH", based on an affordable driver from here, http://www.volvotreter.de/th.htm, works quite well. I've built a couple of them up to now..

there is definately a new driver going in. thats someone elses box in that picture. (the horn) mine is identical. the one with all the parts taken off the sub is mine from a muteki 7000. the white horn pic is mine

Why is it that Sony is capable of producing very high-quality products, yet such products are few and far between, while the gaps are filled with cheap crap? If only all Sony products were like the SS-M7 speakers and ES gear, their name would be a highly-respected one. However, all the junk they make has really soiled the Sony name, at least to me.

I don't understand this thread. Aren't the Muteki products just inexpensive shelf systems? These things are specifically designed to produce the most output with the greatest feature set for the lowest cost.

That has ALWAYS meant, cheaping out on drivers, amplifiers, and power supplies

Sony builds some very solid hifi gear too, but you aren't going to find it in a $600 all-in-on shelf system. A $500+ receiver or CD player, sure, but not in a shelf system.

As for the "why don't they build better stuff" comment. How many of us have ever bought a new XBR Television or ES audio component? That part of the global market is tiny!

The world is full of Target, Tesco, and WalMart shoppers and that's who these products are designed for!

no. there is muteki that is a 7.2/7.4/6.2/6.4 home theatre systems. it wasnt a good idea to buy it. i sold the subwoofers ages ago on ebay. still have the receiver and the speakers. believe it or not the speakers are better built and use better drivers then the subwoofers. the speakers use rather large mags. the horn is real not some crapy tweeter behind. the speakers are fairly good quality
