Sony str-6055 Bass- too much?

Gitter Done!
I'm working on this unit for a gent. It was brought to me with complaints that it was too boomy, not only was it boomy it sounded like crap. After a full recap I discovered a cap on the eq board was absolutely destroyed. After I fired it up on fresh caps, bass at half is crazy boomy sounding but very clean. I can turn the bass down however treble is not like this at all. It runs 2 alps double 50K ohm pots. In circuit the treble pot will go as low at 500ohm and as high as 48K. The bass pot however moved from 6-9K ohms??? I've checked every resistor and film cap in circuit, they are all within spec- I also pulled the bass pot, it's working perfectly. Did sony design them this way? I don't have another one to compare. Even with the bass turned all the way down you can still hear a slight amount of bass.

I have measured it in and out of circuit. They are original alps 50k pots for both treble and bass. I figured out last night why the cap was destroyed, someone used long screws through the wood case. I gave it another listen to last night. At 1/3 volume the bass was fine, I just think its "by design".
