Speakers with questionable "upgrades"... post your findings here.

It seems to me that the first picture doesn't show a questionable upgrade but, rather, an entirely new speaker. One made up of every orphan driver the audio savant had available. I have to admit that I'm curious how it sounds.
The second picture is the even more aperiodic A 25, so it must be even more better.

Now that you mention it, you might have a point. Wonder if the box was from one of the big Bozaks and that is the only driver left.

Where were all these Advents with the wrong drivers when I had eight of the correct woofers in my basement?

And what is it, with all the people stuffing Rockford-Fosgate Series 1 car woofers into them? I swear, it seems like every third bastardized Advent has had one of those woofers, recently. Those woofers were readily available years ago, and fairly cheap- but not THAT common, and not THAT recently (they're from the 1980s-1990s)!

Regards,
Gordon.

4 Ohm car subwoofers are a must! And those sucked ...

Well, I mean, the Series 1 was a bog-standard Carbonneau 12"woofer. They did fine. They were just not made for mega-power, or to work in small enclosures. In the right enclosure, they sounded good. Had one guy who had a Vega station wagon, who built a big box in the back for four of them- and they pounded pretty good. Think he had them on a couple of the old Sanyo PA6100s. Low buck system that got with the program.

They were terrible for midrange, though. Definitely didn't want to be running them above about 200Hz.

Gordon.

Why is it that Advent speakers predominate the category of speakers that have had their woofers replaced with"questionable" alternatives ? Were the original woofers prone to failure?

I guess it's because Advents were one of the most popular speakers in the United States. So there are more of them around than a lot of other speakers. The woofers aren't any more prone to rotting out than other speakers with foam surrounds. People probably either thought they couldn't be repaired, and threw another set in there. It was almost Radio Shack's business, they sold replacement woofers in all the popular sizes.

This + teenage boys wanting 'more bass' would be my guess. ;)
