Szabo Model 525

Hi Audiokarma-ites.
Just won these speakers on Ebay. They are Canadian made in Cambridge Ontario. They measure 14 x 8 ½ x 8 inches, 36 x 21 x 20 cm. Just the right bookshelf size for me. I hope they have a reasonable bass response, at least as well as my Celestion Ditton 100's.

I cannot find any info on the interwebs on them. Does anyone know or own this model and what are your thoughts?
Cheers.

Nice Szabos! Don't see many around any more. I doubt they would have as much bass as your Celestions.

I have a pair of 424s I'm in the middle of refoaming. Great little speakers. I believe the drivers came from McBrides in K-W, but I could be wrong.

Do the 525s have real wood cabinets like the 424s?

Wow, those 424's of yours look real nice! Wanna trade?
Can't tell by the pictures whether the 525's I bought have real wood veneers. Should know tomorrow when I pick them up.

Huh, thought I was the only one. I have a pair of 424 Szabos too, kinda. Bought them for the cabs -- gorgeous make, and solid oak. The drivers in mine were different than yours, though -- phenolic tweeters and pretty crappy little bass drivers. Replaced them with some better drivers, put real binding posts on the back, and I still use them as my desktop speakers today. Cabs look great when freshly oiled. :thmbsp:

Szabo Towers

I have a pair of black Szabo Towers.... I found them in a thrift store,complete.. minus the woofers, for $10.00. I had a extra pair of Polk Audio 6" woofers...they worked great! (Ebay $12/pr.) The picture below is one I found on the net...my speakers are stashed away at the moment! They are 28" tall, black vinyl finish...I don't know the model number.

Here is my Szabo 424. Last and best version with the Vifa 19td tweeter and the in house woofer by Cambridge. Retail was $600 for a pair. Mine have a new crossover and proper binding posts.
Cabs are outstanding and they image so well I have not found anything better under $1000. They hold there own in a small room for bass but I pair mine with sub.

Yeah, I love the cabs -- one of the best I've ever seen (at least in person). The drivers in yours look far superior to the ones that were in mine. I was surprised how lousy they were, considering the beautiful little cabinets they were in. I replaced them with the drivers and X-overs from a similarly-sized pair of Magnats that had trashed ugly cabs. do yours have a grille cover on the back, as well?

Picked up the Szabo 525's today, purchased off Ebay. Pleasant gentleman. Cabs in excellent shape! . . . but, not wood veneer, vinyl oak grain. The black grill looks sharp, good colour contrast against the honey oak. Not as sexy looking as the 424's posted here though. Woofers were refoamed, a little sloppy but will do. I traced a slight buzz to a loose dust cap on one of the woofers. Otherwise, sound surprising good. Low end, while not super extended is fairly low for it's size. Bass is tight, punchy(?). Everything is sharp, tight and crisp. Sound very similar to the Celestion Ditton 100's. Cab size is also very similar. VERY heavy for their size. I'm impressed and paid a very reasonable thirty six bucks. I've seen crap at the thrifts for a lot more (don't let me get started on this).

Listening to them on my brand spanking new TA2020 amp just received a few days ago. I'm a vintage audio guy but man, T-amps are where its at today, sound quality for your buck. Can't believe the sound out of this little thing.

Pictures hopefully tomorrow.

Szabo made some very good speakers...the tweeter looks to be the same as used in the 833 that retailed for around 1000 bucks in the 80's. I read somewhere the 525 also used a Seas woofer...which is a good thing (very!)

Beautiful...then again I have a thing for small 2 ways!

Ditto. I have about over a dozen pairs, all but 2 are 2 way. One is an Electrovoice coaxial and the other an A/D/S. All, except for the ADS are compact bookshelf size. Add a sub and all's good. Even without a sub, good compact 2 way can do a credible job.

Just on the front.

Pics

So, here are the pictures. The iphone camera doesn't do closeup well, grainy.
The Italian restaurant checkered table cloth was not part of the deal.

Last few pics:
As you can tell, the cabs are in fantastic shape.
The speaker sounds very good. Very similar in both size/volume and sound to my Celestions Ditton 100s, the Celestions slightly better and fuller sounding than the Szabo's.

I just got a pair of the 525s. Same model as yours, except in black veneer. I wonder if this iteration of the speaker were the earlier or later model? Some models have a raised baffle plate on which the drivers sit. I don't know if the raised baffle was an earlier or a later edition. Either raising the drivers was seen as an improvement or taken away as a cost saving measure during production. Anyway, I concur about these being special speakers. I have them running with a Fisher 500B receiver and the detail is wonderful and the treble absolutely lovely -- airy and refined. One of the best trebles I've heard. As others have mentioned, the cabinet are like rock, so solid. The Szabos are great speakers, and I've had quite a few over the years. :thmbsp: I think these are going to be my main second system speakers (Dahlquist DQ-10s are my mains). As others have said, do not pass up these speakers if you stumble across a pair. The correct foam size is 5.25". Perfect bedroom or den speaker. Listening to the Blade Runner soundtrack right now, it's hardly ever sounded better. The bass that is there is surprisingly powerful for their size. Their strength is a very natural, relaxed presentation. Pianos are amazing. just about perfect weight. The music sits a bit back in the soundstage and the vocals sound human and unforced. They perform best at lower levels, which is a nice thing. A nice natural, silky listen level for prolonged periods. If you're looking for a bombastic presentation or to bring down the walls with guitars, these are probably not your speakers, they're too polite for that. But if you want a speaker that chases the holy grail of "smooth but detailed" this are great little speakers.

I have owned several different model Szabo speakers including the 424, 525, 626 and 823's. They are all very nicely designed speakers and sound wonderful. The 525 as the next generation version of the 424 and came in two versions. One had the flat baffle board and the newer version had an extended-forward baffle to slightly improve dispersion. While the 424 had neat little solid oak cabinets the 525 was a considerably better sounding speaker. The larger cabinet volume allowed a more simplified crossover which gave superior LF response and smoother mid range. The 626 had even more bass but at the expense of some detail in the upper mid range. The 823 was a completely different animal as it was a large 3 way with lovely bass response and smooth FR throughout the full range. All in all they were a well thought out and engineered line of speakers.
