Tape Monitor Switch on 3 Head Cassette Deck Question?

I am trying to fix my Nakamichi 482Z it's a 3 head deck.

My question is this:

I made a recording from vinyl through my Luxman L-430. I pushed the "record" button on the Luxman and set it to Tape Source.

Then while recording on the Nakamichi I pressed the tape monitor switch which toggles source or tape. On source I hear the signal from the turntable and on tape I hear the tape right? I left it on tape.

So isn't it supposed to let me hear what is actually recorded onto the tape.

Because it sounded fine, but when I play the tape back it is full of pops and crackles.

Do I have it set up wrong or doesn't the tape monitor switch do what I think it does?

Yes, on a true three-head deck, SOURCE allows you to hear what is about to be recorded, and TAPE lets you hear what is in fact recorded on the tape.

If when playing back the tapes later on, you are hearing popping and crackling, it is due to some other cause. Something must have changed between when the original recording was made and when it was later auditioned. Dirty heads is one common cause of this. Failure of the notorious "orange film caps" in the Nak's amp circuits is another.

Fred I replaced 2 orange capacitors in the bias oscillator as I got the popping and crackling while recording with the tape switch selected, so I may have fixed one problem.

The good news is I have ordered enough caps to replace every orange cap, all 22 of them. I will replace 5 or six at a time and test the deck to make sure I am on the right track. There is only about six different values so fingers crossed it will fix the problem.

My soldering skills are on a steep learning curve.
