The gall of Toyota.

Old Stuff New Stuff As long as it's Good Stuff

Toyota is going to make you pay to start your car with your key fob. To the tune of 8 bucks a month and there's no internet involved. This is for cars made in the last 3 years. Most people don't know that after the introductory period they won't be able to remote start with the fob.

Never heard of this, but this is the stuff that makes me livid. There's nothing wrong with new technology -- but when they hold technology for ransom, it's insane, and it's happening more and more. There should be laws that prevent this kind of crap, and that put caps on criminally marked up changes (e.g. $600 key replacements).

Yes folks, RF is now a subscription business... wait til they start enabling Bluetooth that way.

Seems more than a bit greedy though, considering they have ZERO costs to maintain any structure for that feature aside from whatever their back end is that shuts down the service when you stop paying. Should be a huge windfall for them if they can convince anyone to sign up for it.

In contrast, we're charging $11.99/month (less if you prepay) for access to a cellular-based service that includes not just remote start and vehicle access, but a full suite of GPS/location-based services that works anywhere in the world as long as your smartphone can connect, via an app that's free to download. Remote start + vehicle access is only $6.99/mo and the range via cellular is obviously WAY better than any RF system will deliver, esp. the OEM system. Or, just get a conventional RF-controlled system which has no monthly costs and almost certainly far better range than any Toyota remote.

I'm celebrating this particular money grab, as it seems most likely to drive disgruntled Toyota owners by the scores into aftermarket stores where products like ours are sold/installed.

"Key" up Carpenter's song:
"It's only just begun....."

My '07 HHR with less than 100K miles looks better to me every day.
One of the few features that it has is remote start which was very handy in the winter when I was working.

My new Outback came with the MySubaru subscription app. Free to start and low initial price for 3 years. Do not remember the renewal price. From your cell phone, you can not just start your car, but set the climate controls, locate your car, see tire pressure, gas mileage, lock/unlock disable vehicle etc. Not sure if I will renew, but it is nice and a lot more than a remote start. I like being able to find your car in a big parking lot.

I for one, am sick of recurring "subscription" type fees.

Electricity and water, i understand.

Cable/internet/phone, I accept (and let's not diverge into "cutting the cord" posts)

...but anything else- NO THANK YOU. You already had your hand in my pocket on the purchase.
