The Italian Job - What would you get?

I know the movie is almost 10yrs old, so this may be an unfair ding to the writers. BUT, at the beginning of the movie The Italian Job, they sit around talking about what they are going to do with their cut of the heist money ($3.5MM each), and Seth Green's character says he's going to buy a stereo that blows women's clothes off. Somehow I remembered that today, so to youtube i went!

Wait, did I hear that right??

So to imdb.com i went!

Lyle: I'm getting a NAD T770 digital decoder with 70-watt amps and Burr-Brown DACs.
Left Ear: [confused] Yeah...
Lyle: It's a big stereo. Speakers so loud, they blow women's clothes off!
Handsome Rob: Now you're talking!

Yep, I did...

With $3.5MM he'd get a 70 Wpc NAD HT unit with Burr Brown Chips for the DAC (I suppose he's using a digital source since he claimed to be the real Napster in the movie, okay I get that) but no mention of the speakers!!!

Now at the end there's a pair of Martin Logan speakers that do blow a woman's clothes off. The only vid i could find of this was some guy showing off that he had the exact same pair in his house while The Italian Job credits were rolling.

I doubt this guy had to steal $35MM with his 9 other friends to afford them though.

I'm not quite sure what I'd get if I had $3.5MM, but I am sure that if I was writing this script, I would have wrote something along the lines of McIntosh monoblocks (which ever model was avail in '03) and some JBL 4435s... or something of the like.

Me, too..I'd like to spend a few days listening to Noel Coward...Yes, I KNOW what he was, but he was also a World-Class "Chic-Derriere", or in English, "Smartass"...One of the wittiest, funniest men in the last century.

I'd find a pair of Bozak Concert Grands (plus a pair of Symphonies to use as rear-fill for my switchable 5.1 setup, and a single Symphony for the center channel), I'd get the appropriate amps to run them (tube AND ss, depending on my mood)...

And then I'd buy a 3.4 million-dollar house to put the gear in... (Well, OK... I'd save a few bucks for some sweet cars, plus I'd cover taxes on everything for the next 20 years...:D)

I thought the "NAD T770 digital decoder with 70w amps and Burr Brown DAC's" thing was a bit generic. I mean, does that model even exist? And I don't know of any DAC or interface that has/needs it's own amps... And 70w p/c isn't exactly going to blow any women's clothes off ANYWAY. I doubt it will even mess up their hair. And I think MY dac has a Burr Brown DAC chip in it, and I paid $150 for it, so what's "Napster" talking about?.. Burr Brown made lots of DAC chips... Did they make flux-capacitors too?

Yeah I remember that too. I had to replay the scene because I said to myself.."Wait..I don't think that makes any sense..".

There's been two movies with the title "the Italian Job". The 1969 version starring Michael Caine and Noel Coward and a different version from 2003 that is the one the OP is referring to.

Yea, guess I just implied the remake as Burr Brown DACs weren't all too popular in '69 :D

That's an expensive NAD for sure.

I'd buy a house to put around my current stereo. Then travel, so I could forget about it, then enjoy coming back to it.

My wife really enjoys that flick. I relate to wanting cool gear. We even looked at the Mini Cooper S. The Napster should spent some time here, then who knows what might have been on his stereo want list.

I had a yellow '03 mini cooper s for a few years. Pretty sweet car, but later sold it for the VW R32 I have now.

The Italian Job didn't influence my purchase decision, parking in SF did!

It was definitely just movie-speak for the 99% who won't question it.

If you can blow the clothes off a woman with that setup, maybe it's the quality of the woman that is...hmmm...how shall we say this delicately? Maybe we should just not say it.

I'd build myself a decent house, but with a recording studio in it, restore my Roadmaster to factory stock, have all my broken gear fixed (Sound Workshop Logex, Ampex AG-440B, Crown CX-844), and start making records.

Of course there'd be a dedicated listening room, but I am very happy with my rig now. I'd spend money traveling around and meeting various AK'ers, and some audio reviewers I have been talking to for years, listen to their systems, then decide what I want to do with mine.

Hopefully I'll have enough left to comfortably pay for gas, taxes, and food for a long time, while still keeping a job.

Exactly why when I heard it I had to post it here, nobody I know outside of this forum would appreciate talking about this for more than 1/2 a second. So, thanks for being audio nerds!

Yeah, a big smile came on my face when I saw the MLs at the end. I laughed when he described the stereo he wanted in the beginning.
