The Official *Technics SL-1200* Owners Club

You're welcome here, as far as I'm concerned!

Well,

In that case...

The first test spin with the Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid soundtrack. The stock headshell is patiently waiting with it's attached AT20SLa while I figure what to do about the missing stylus. The Ortofon OM with Digitrack 200NE sounds VERY good!

Next step after all the cleaning and repairing- tonearm mods. :music:

Oh My!!!!!!!!!!
Where's the 'delihaus', or 'beatcomer'? Or for that matter anyone else?...

Funny you should ask- beatcomber and I hung out a bit friday with AudioDon.

...There were other things that happened perhaps, none of us knew about including myself?

...

A great table- and so cool it's a Manley Labs owned model. A bit of history there, Frank!

Anyhoo, I still love the more conventional models a bit more...

P.S. I'm still gushing at how wonderful my four original vintage SL-120/SL-1200 Mark1's perform and sound...Of course assisted by my S.M.E. 3009 'Non-Improved' and 'Improved' tone-arms combined with my AT-1500MLX & AT-440MLa cartridges....

Very glad to hear this Frank!

Sometimes we can drive ourselves crazy chasing the "perfect sound", and end up not enjoying ourselves.

Glad you are enjoying your tables.

So I wrapped my tonearm with Rescue Tape, just to see if wrapping makes a difference.

The adhesive is made to stick mostly to itself, so it should be removable.

No pictures; it's ugly.

It definitely reduces the ringing when I do a tap test. It certainly hasn't hurt the sound. I will live with it for a few weeks before judging it.

Well this stuff is thicker and more pliable than shrink tubing. And it's easier to remove than electrical tape. I see no reason not to experiment with reversible stuff.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can use to polish the strobe section on the outside of the platter. Mine is very dull - I'm already planning to refresh the matt black paint underneath (paint it, and then wipe the top layer with a cloth to remove the black paint from the raised sections), but was wondering whether metal polish (and which one) or fine sandpaper would be best.

I have been screwing around with my SL1200 and decided that my modded stock arm isn't as good as my modded Sumiko FT-3 arm. The stock arm IS very good though. I also found that the stock arm sounds better with my Denon DL-160 than it does with my Denon DL-103R. :scratch2:

When I put the Sumiko FT-3 on my modded Pioneer PL-41 it sounded better than my SL1200 and modded arm with the DL-160. Right now that PL-41 sounds mighty nice! I stick with my belief that the stock arm can only take you so far and that the table gets better with a quality arm.

Are you massing up the stock arm for use with the 103R? I know my standard 103 is kind of a mess with the standard headshell, but with a Sumiko shell and a 3G copper spacer weight it improves a lot.

I've no doubt there are gains to be had with another arm though. I'm heavily considering the surgery.

KAB sells the ones that come standard with Technics turntables. They are magnetic and cannot be used with Denon cartridges. VPI sells ones that work (of course way more expensive), and other options are available as well.

Also, the spacer is needed on my MK2 as the VTA base does not go low enough to properly set VTA with the 103 (using the 1/4" supermat).
