Thinking of restoring Pioneer Qx-949a

Power switch is broken. Glass is broken. Scope visualizer does not light up. Does anyone have experience with these units? After shipping price will be around 300. Should I do it?

$300,- US I presume, is a lot of money. It is 2channel/4 channel quad and has no pre out / main connectivity. Is dificult to work on with unobtanium drop in parts. And this particulair receiver is in bad condition. But hè what is it worth to you and why? I owned this receiver while living oversees in original mint and working condition and traded soon after purchase it in for another 2/4channel with pre out Pioneer separate / integrated amp. And that was while I was still completely into quad and Pioneer. If you are a re-seller audio 'flipper' (which I am not, never was or will be); I doubt if you make a profit on it. Vintage Quad is NOT sought after, no matter what and who ever tries to convince you otherwise. It is only populair by a very small group of 4channel stereo enthusiasts / collectors. Having said all that, mine at least sounded great, and this receiver is definitely a piece of art!

Do you really want a 949a? That one will need new glass, new power switch, a triac conversion for the switch, a careful rebuild of the scope display. And then EVERYTHING else will need rebuilding too. If you want a challenge and your good with a soldering iron and your patient, and money isn't an issue, then go for it. You'll have to do it for the love though.

That receiver, with all its issues, is only worth $100 - $150 'cause you're going to spend several hundred more in parts if you are going to be the one working on it. A tech won't touch a unit with these issues for less than $500 minimum IMHO.

A couple of days ago I myself started on this same journey. A few months ago I bought a 949A that was in except for a couple of scratches underneath the faceplate, is in like new condition cosmetically, but had a couple of issues. I was planning on doing it as a winter project. Anyway, I decided to start off with what looked to me like the biggest challenge of this restoration, the two dual amplifier boards. The rest of it seems like a ton of work also, but none appear to require completely unhooking every wire. So although the amplifier sections were operating correctly, because of the terrible accessibility, I’m replacing most of the components including the trim pots. IMG_4700.jpegIMG_4699.jpeg
