Very Pleased with 1626 SET 'Darling' Amp

chinacave

Its Like a Jungle Sometimes; It makes me Wonder
All 750mw of it (Actually measured it at 1 watt (1000mw..!)

Also it is my first scratch-built amp - So after literally 2+ decades of semi- learning how to repair tube stuff, several strip-down-to-each part and re-assemble rebuilds of Heath and Fisher and the like, and gathering parts, I actually cut some metal......

Sounds really good. I Mean Really good. I am sure a part of it is psychological pre-load of hearing wonderful music because I built it. I have yet to develop critical or trained ears to really objectively / subjectively evaluate them - I have them playing through open baffle coaxial University 6201's - AND amazed at the fidelity and bass / imaging etc & so forth from the speakers as well.

I used the Daneliek schematic from Sound Practices Magazine.

Tubes and output transformers (Edcor XSE 15w) came courtesy of a trade with G Kaufman, Power transformer and choke and invaluable advice on using PSDU came from Tom Bavis, and the chassis was pulled from the basement workshop of the passed father of one of my oldest friends, who was a pioneer in Electron Microscopes - lots of good metal bits were there...

Due to the location the output transformers ended up in, I soldered the binding posts directly to the secondary lugs of the OPT's - and -Hey-Ho! it is exactly the same spacing as a dual banana plug!

The can on the top is a dual 5.5uf / 400v oil cap - made by Tobe Deutschmann of Canton Mass - ancestor of Tandy / Radio Shack, I believe. And 'Deutschmann' is a family name of mine, so that helps the imaging and PRAT, I am sure......

This is the first SE amp I have really had the chance to listen to at length, and get some feedback on the 'system at the recent Clinton, Mass 'Frankenfest' - I think it was well received. Guess there really IS something to this flea-watt SET game. Which is really the main reason I built this. And also to get some experience with parts layout, mounting, wiring.... What a bear!

On to 45 and 2A3 and 807's and ?? SE amps!

Looks very nice, both topside and underneath.

I can't comment on the layout because you're ahead of me in the scratch build department.

WOW! Fantastic layout, vitamin Qs, and all the good stuff. I never knew if you could build with these little guys or not, but I've been saving them up every time I come across one just because they look so cool. Dang, I'd love to give it a listen, but just knowing you think they sound great is good enough. I had no idea if they sounded like crap or what, so now I'm glad I hoarded some up. I bet they would be good in a preamp or head amp too. Man, that's a keeper, I wouldn't ever sell it. Of course if you do, oops, I almost broke a rule. Good thing I caught myself. Enjoy that amp, it definitely looks like an amp man's amp.:music:

BTW, what are the driver tubes, what are you using for rectification, and what brand volume pot is that? I've never seen a circuit in a sound practices mag. that didn't look cool. I have every issue too (Thanks Celt), so I'm gonna dig that one out. Do you know which number / volume it was?

Edit, I see the diodes now, maybe 14007s?

Here is the basic schematic I used.

The drivers are 8532's- The PS is a bit different to accommodate the PT I got from Tom Bavis - 1/2 wave rectifier with two IN4007's, CLRCRC - if I have the nomenclature down right.

New Belton Octals and Canadian Surplus 7-pin ceramic sockets. I am a sucker for parts and bits from the old days, Millen, EF Johnson, Vit Q / Astron caps, ceramic sockets. Bless our crazy Uncle Sam, as Steve Melthisikan of the old Angela Instruments catalogs used to say... I tried to use a Bendix tube rectifier here that I got from Bryce, but it has a 26v filament... next time.

The ganged volume control is a El-Cheapo 100K from AES, I think - nothing special.

This was a 'test the waters' type of thing. I have been greatly guided by seeing and studying and stealing ideas from all the fine builds I have seen here and elsewhere over the years. Low parts count really helped me too.

Thanks all for the kind comments. Still can't believe so little POWER sounds so good - I did run output tests and it starts to clip right at 1 watt.. so I got fully 25% more power than the article in SP noted!! And sound so good on speakers slapped on a random piece of chipboard from the rotting junk in the basement at work.

@ Jay - so build one already! hell, I crashed this party, it should be a dawdle for you..

Well, I'd say this is a testament to half wave rectification. You just have a little more ripple at the start. Very nice man, very nice.

Is there a preferred brand on the 8532? I think I might go over to epay and grab a couple sleeves. Nice affordable tube.

I'm the LAST guy to answer that. If the amp works and my house does not burn down, then that is a good tube to me at this stage of the game. I think these are 80's JAN Phillips 8532's. The 1626 are KenRads.

After I finished it, I listened to it for 2-3 weeks straight before I even turned on the 'main' system again, which right now is LP / CD / Tuner into Marantz 7C (Burning in / testing a restoration for a pal) / totally rebuilt Fisher 30A's / B&W DM-70 hybrid electrostats. The Darling and the OB speakers sounded really, uh... like, REAL y'know? I only turned on the other stuff as I took apart the bitty amp and speaks to take to the 'fest.

Jazz, Bluegrass, girl with guitar, Talking Heads and Pink Floyd and Floyd Collins, all sounded great (OK the Dead Kennedys was a bit much..) I am really stoked to play more with the Open baffles as well - amazing sound IMHO.......

Fantastic build! Less-is-more personified.

Try a 2A3 next if you want big power (:)). Good iron, a simple circuit, some carefully selected parts in the kind of build you pulled-off with the Darling and you might just realize you've found your end game - I think I'm done at 2A3.

Yeah... me and Bill... the monster-power amp guys (insert Tim "the Toolman" Taylor" grunt here)!

ahem

Well done! There's nothing like building your first 'from scratch' amplifier. And yes, I am not a big fan of cutting metal, either.

Funky bud box construction, trash-picked chipboard baffles...that's what I'm taklin' about!

It don't get no better...
