VPI Scout with Acrylic Platter...do you use a mat?

I recently acquired a Scout with acrylic platter. Do any of these owners use a mat? If so which type works best for you? I have been using a leather mat and prefer it to the bare acrylic but curious to know what others do. I do not use the clamp.

With any of the acrylic platter tables I have owned I never use a mat. They all have a clamping system, cause you want the vinyl and platter to function as a single entity...being mechanically coupled.

If I were to use a mat it would be a sticky type, probably something along the lines of the Platter Matter. But that would not be my choice of set up.

I had a similar acrylic platter on my Genie and had it riding on the bare acrylic w/weight. I guess I may be hearing a difference due to the change in VTA...so will give it another go around without the mat and re- adjust the VTA. There is a lot to get used to with this table...especially the arm. Tracks like a real champ.

What about the theory that using a clamp can compress or mute some detail. I find its a little more airy less a clamp.

I just adjusted the vta and its better now directly on the acrylic.

Don't know how it would mute detail, as the "detail" is created by the stylus velocities as it travels the grooves. It may be damping resonates in the vinyl that were feeding "extra" info into the stylus, and people hear this as "detail".
Some of that may be quite pleasing though through its own character.

Yep, no mat...

How does the 10x5 compare to a DL-110 ?Just thinking down the road when I wear this out as I will most likely stay with HOMC.

Forget this...I found a good comparative review from someone who tried the 110 first and then the 10x5 and says the 10x5 is better suited, but of course the 110 was no slouch...just need the extra tonearm plate [which is what I did].

I have VPI Scout with acrylic platter too and I use a thin carbon fiber mat that works very well with HRX clamp.

The 10X5 is just a really solid good sounding HOMC. I'm a bit biased though. I've mainly owned Dynavectors since 2003.
