Good day,

What are a good set of bookshelf front and rear mains for music and HT? Id like excellent music for rock and classical. Im using a Yamaha RX-V1 and have a Yamaha YST-SW160 sub. I also as of now have a pair of old Yamaha NS A637 which have been ok but Id like to know..1, are the new NS6490's better or should I go with
JBL HLS810's. I can get 2 very clean JBL HLS810's for $100. Opinions on these speakers? Or should I go for something else? Trying to do this without buying $500 of new speakers if possible.

Those are a newer speaker I've not heard, but the reviews look good. For 100 bucks take a shot. If you want to try vintage keep an eye out for JBL L19/ 4301's great for music. If you are handy check these out, lots of discussion here on these,
Overnight Sensations MT Speaker, parts express.

Personally I like the JBL studio 830s. It's a new speaker that's that sounds descent. I always like the way they look without the grills. Unfortunately it's a bit above your budget but I still think you should consider them.

I just cant see $1,000 to $1300 for for. They are "Sold out" by JBL right now so the scalpers are having their fun. Must be a good sounding speaker. Is there anything I may be able to find used that sounds nearly as good? Or even new but for less?
I saw these last night. I remember seeing people set them up in sound rooms when there was such a thing. How would 4 of these do with a separate sub-woofer? JBL Control One.......

id like to keep the price of 4 speakers under $500. Used is no problem.

I don't see much about them but the Infinity RS1 bookshelf speakers sound damn good and handle quite a bit of power. I think they are rated at 100wpc and I drove them with a 500wpc amp. I have not heard a lot of bookshelf speakers that really give good tight room filling bass so I am thinking a sub will be needed with most any small sized speakers (depending on room size of course). I had a pair of Allison's that looked like a small square. They sounded good also but that lack of bottom end was noticeable

I have a sub.

I have had a pair of JBL Studio S38s for about 15 years and they never disappoint, quite amazing for their size IMHO. Even better with a sub to fill out the bottom particularly for HT. They are also magnetically shielded and a matching center is available. They still can be found pretty cheap as they are currently in the old but not yet vintage camp, though I think some folks are starting to catch on and try to get more for them. Recent ebay sales are around $150-200 a pair, I've seen them go cheaper locally on CL. They were $600 a pair in 2001. General consensus seems to be that the S38s are better than the S38 IIs, which were a redesign after they got sued for patent infringement on the port design as I recall. I haven't heard the later ones to compare, some folks say they are still very good just not quite as good.

I have two pairs of those JBL Control One mini speakers. They sound good for being such a small speaker, but they do not have as much clarity as the Pioneer SP-BS22LR or Sony Core bookshelf speakers. Peace and goodwill.

I bought 4
JBL HLS 810's for $250. Hope they sound as good as everyone says. I will let you guys know. Also I needed a preamp as my Yamaha doesn't like the .7MV output from my Stanton cartridge. So I bought a NAD preamp 1130 with a big ugly crack on the corner for $30. If it works it should be awesome as preamps dedicated to phono that have specs anywhere near this NAD1130 cost well over $600. Hope this new (to me) system works out.

I'd try the Pioneer SP-BS22lr: http://www.parts-express.com/pionee...esigned-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-pair--250-656
Or Dayton Air : http://www.parts-express.com/dayton...kshelf-speaker-with-amt-tweeter-pair--300-651

They both seem very popular. I dont need this type of speaker atm but that would be my choice.
And I would not use a Sub, but that's just me.

Eric

If you want to hear any sort of realistic bass, either of those speakers need a subwoofer. FWIW I have a pair of SP-BS21-LR's in my bedroom system. I added a powered subwoofer for some realistic bass.

I'm glad that you have found something you enjoy.
