Toasting these 3 fallen young men out of the original 8 in my son’s squad in the sandbox. I never met them, but I feel like I have. Fortunately my son was the SAW gunner and covering the team when the IED took the 1st two. The third was taken by a sniper on his first day as the new squad leader a few days later. He was my 4 year old grandson’s bestie. My heart still breaks for their parents, especially for Gifford’s and his fiancée. She seemed so nice, so appreciative. We met them at the funeral at Point Loma. I pray that 20 years later they have made peace with their loss.
edit: forgot to hit post last night.
Yes it is/was. My son tested well, wanted Rangers got offered his choice of 18X (5yrs) or Apache pilot (8yrs). He took 18X. He did combined basic/infantry at Bragg, Airborne at Benning and then Camp Mackall for Green Beret. He got hurt on the course (quicksand!) and was med-dropped from SF. That’s how he ended up in the just reconstituted 3rd of the 509th Airborne Paratroopers at Fort Richardson, AK. The original ill-fated “Geronimo's” that suffered 90% casualties at the Battle of the Bulge. After a year of Arctic training they deploy to the sandbox and kick down doors and grab up high value detainees. That’s how he ended up squatting in that shooting gallery for 6 months. After a 14 month tour he went back and graduated from the SWC. He retired last year after doing 20.
