What are you Listening To Right Now? - and more

That’s useful to know. I was a bit bothered about running low impedance speakers. The MLs should be within range. The main diet for the system will be the contents of Apple Music via Bluetooth, but I have this Oppo SACD player too for the disks I haven’t ripped.

At some point, I’ll add a phono preamp but that can wait.
I put my Fosi V3 monos onto a pair of Quad ESL 989s. Flawless. Well, the amps were. The speakers have the snap crackle and pop. I have a repair kit which I will put to use {checks watch}... sometime.

Good Monday afternoon AK family and friends. I hope all is well. Spent the morning at Ottawa’s experimental farm. We’re not allowed to pat the animals because of fear of people getting hurt. I grew up on a farm and pet a few as I can still read the animals and know which ones like to be petted and which ones don’t. I saw my daughter almost get picked up by her face from a cow tongue. I laughed my ass off. Holstein cows are the most friendly cows I know of. The bulls on the other hand are the most treacherous and dangerous.

Grandson is sleeping, the kids are running errands so I’m down in the man cave listening to tunes. I’m listening to the 2nd disc of

Quad speakers were in my sights years ago when I lived in the UK. “The closest approach to the original sound” was the company advertising blurb.
Not a fan of the high polarizing voltage in electrostatics, plus they need a sub as most have no bottom end at all... The big Dayton Wright's are a big step up in overall response... they apparently are magic... :) I would personally prefer your MLs by a long shot over the Quads... :)

The 989s were a TOTL redesign that purported to cure all the defects of the 57s -- at $8,000 in 2003. But they had a design flaw -- the adhesive on the stators fails causing arcing. According to teh GOOgol and right here on AK they're repairable. It's just bit of a b!t¢h of a process. I really, really liked what I heard when I had them fired up tho.

Can't say from experience since I haven't put them through their paces but the 989s added extra low end panels which supposedly helped fill in that low end. Very different from the 57s and 63s according to "they."

There was this guy at work who would get emotional when he heard that song. He'd start singing in a loud, off-key voice, and begin weeping.

I think it had something to do with his first true love... that went bad.

I had to quickly FF the channel each time it played, to avoid major drama.

He moved on to another job.

If you don't know Tinariwen, check them out. "Desert Blues" is the genre that they basically invented. Per Wikipedia: Tinariwen is a Grammy-winning collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara, active since approximately 1979. They developed the "ishumar" or "assouf" guitar style, described as "Desert Blues" due to its fusion of traditional Tuareg music with American blues and rock elements. The collective's fluid lineup reflects nomadic life, and their music frequently addresses themes of loneliness, longing, and rebellion. Gaining international recognition after a 2001 performance and the 2002 album The Radio Tisdas Sessions, their sound, featuring layered vocals and hypnotic guitar, served as a key medium for Tuareg fighters.

Yes but subs can be placed in a room relative to the listener position that provides the smoothest response. I'm not a fan of speakers with built in subwoofers as most people's room are not setup for good bass response into a smooth transition to the mids and highs relative to the listener position. It will be either a compromise among boomy bass, bass nulls, or ragged in room response. The room needs to be designed dimensionally to support a smooth response.

I’m satisfied with the MLs. The woofer in the Theos is 8”. They put out a decent sound. At some point, I’ll get my Bryston amp repaired and sell it. It fizzled out and silenced the MLs. I couldn’t be bothered doing anything about it while I was on the road all the time. Now I get home regularly, it’s time to fire up the sounds again.

Don't Bryston's have a lifetime warranty, or at least 20 years or something crazy? :dunno:
